The main concentrations of birds and dead fish have been around the raft that was operating the dredge for geotube filling. Click to enlarge. Early morning photo makes it hard to see turkey vultures but they are there. The dead fish are also scattered widely around our waterways - my opinion, they were trying to swim away from something. First photo was Wednesday, the others are today.

What Fish, What Raft?

David,Elaine got it right, the birds cannot be wrong, the culprit is there for sure.
ReplyDeleteI strongly suggest that all work be suspended until a complete investigation determines the cause of this major polution problem. UCO should investigate independently from WPRF who is managing ( Is it? )this construction work. Andre
Good point. Operations Cmte meeting 9:30 Mon 11/30 am UCO, I believe.
ReplyDeleteOn Sunday, the clubhouse looked like a scene from Hitchcock's "The Birds." I hope our feathered friends reduce their numbers soon.
ReplyDeleteThere is now mostly agreement on the reasons for fish kill - lack of dissolved oxygen (DO), Florida Fisheries and Wildlife, Lakes & Waterways (work for us and WPRF) say cloudy weather (less photosynthesis, less oxygen), hardly any water plants (less oxygen), colder weather, torrential rain washed crud, fertilizer, and weed killer into lakes, turbidity from dredging, possible overcrowding of shad. We really need heavy duty fountain oxygenators, our ornamental spray fountains add little oxygen.
