Enigma machine’s Hebrew secret

A new exhibit in Jerusalem unveils a famed Nazi encryption device that was converted into Hebrew

A new exhibit in Jerusalem has revealed for the first time an unusual variation on one the most famous encryption devices in history — a Hebrew text version of the World War II-era German Enigma machine.
The Jerusalem Bloomfield Science Museum this week opened its CAPTCHA exhibit to mark 70 years since the development of the electronic computer. Among the various artifacts on display is the curious example of an enigma machine.
 -
The device was one of several acquired by the Israel Defense Forces in the years after the establishment of the state in 1948, Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Thursday. The machines were tinkered with to adapt the keys to accommodate the 22 letters used in the Hebrew alphabet and then pressed into service to keep the new state’s military secrets under wraps.
-
However, apparently unbeknownst to Israel’s military, the seemingly secure Enigma machine codes had already been cracked in what was one of the most closely guarded secrets of WWII.
The Enigma machine was invented at the end of World War I and used by the German military from the 1930s onward to encrypt messages.
-
With trillions of possible combinations, its codes were considered impregnable. However, following on earlier breakthroughs by Polish intelligence services, in 1939 a British team led by Alan Turing at Bletchley Hall finally managed to break the Enigma machine codes, giving the allies an inestimable advantage over the Nazis.
-
The success was one of the most closely guarded secrets of the war and afterwards, as Britain encouraged former colonies that had gained their independence to use the enigma machines for their own military secrets.
Turing’s accomplishment was only made public in the 1970s, by which time the machines were obsolete.
-
The science museum exhibit celebrates the various stages in the development of computers and gets its unusual name from the acronym “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart,” which is a variety of methods utilized in computing to verify that a user is, in fact, human. Internet users will be familiar with common CAPTCHA tests on websites that ask for coded numbers to be typed as confirmation before setting up some accounts.

Condo residents find way around pet-free buildings
-
Updates with quotes, detail.
MIAMI (AP) -- A dogfight is developing in some pet-free condominium complexes across South Florida.
-
The reason? A loop-hole that allows pets if residents can get them classified as "emotional support animals." It's apparently as easy as getting a physician, psychiatrist, social worker or mental health professional to sign a letter saying the resident gets emotional support from the pet.
"It's almost an epidemic here at the beach," George Zamora, a property manager for Regatta Real Estate Management, told The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/12EqRDq ).
-
"It's highly suspect when people start asking whether or not they can have a pet, and all of a sudden, they show up and say they need emotional support," said Zamora, whose company manages 93 condominium associations in Miami-Dade County. "If you legitimately have an issue, you don't ask."
Marcela Alvarez lived at Bay Garden Manor Condominium on Miami Beach with her husband for 14 years. When they got divorced, her chiropractor suggested she get a pet. Alvarez talked to an endocrinologist, who agreed to sign the letter.
-
"I thought, 'Oh why not? If you think that's important to you, then that's fine with me,'" said Dr. Marco Fiore, who signed the paper for Alvarez.
-
Alvarez got a Jack Russell named Pelusa, who now lives in the pet-free building.
It's a different story for Steve Vincent, who lives in the building and recently had a kidney transplant. Doctors told him avoiding fur is a medical imperative and he's tired of having dogs "sniff" him in the elevator.
-
"I'm all for everybody being happy and living a healthy life," said Vincent. "But you can't do that at other people's expense.
-
Attorney Paul J. Milberg recently held a seminar to teach property managers to deal with requests for emotional support animals. He explained what kinds of questions they can ask, the documentation needed to verify legitimacy and the methods they can take to protect themselves in granting an accommodation.
-
Dog trainer Rose Lesniak says she's received calls from people seeing letters for their condo associations. She says she can tell right away whether someone has an emotional need.
"All they want is a letter from me saying their dog is certified and I tell them that's not the way it works."

BOSTON MARATHON FRAUD ALERT

-

 Intelligence Note

Prepared by the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)

Middle East Cyber Intelligence Unit (MECIU)
April 18, 2013
...................................................................................

BEWARE OF POSSIBLE FRAUD ASSOCIATED WITH THE BOSTON MARATHON EXPLOSIONS
-
On 04/15/2013, two explosions occurred near the finish line of the Boston Marathon causing death and injury to spectators, as well as participants of the marathon. While Americans feel the need to assist or contribute to those affected by this tragedy; criminals see it as way to exploit contributor’s kindness. History has shown criminals utilize disasters to take advantage of those wanting to assist.
-
Individuals need to be aware of emerging fraud online associated with the explosions and how to take necessary precautions when using e-mail and social networking Web sites. As of 17 April 2013, the FBI has received indications that individuals may be using social media and e-mail to facilitate fraudulent activities online.
-
There have been reports of a Spam E-mail being circulated to lure potential victims to malware and exploits. The subject of the spam e-mail in one version is “Boston Marathon Explosion”. The e-mail contains links that could infect your computer. Clicking on the link opens up a compromised Web page that shows a series of videos of the attack site.
-
There is an unloaded video at the bottom of the Web page that leads to the Red Exploit Kit, which exploits various vulnerabilities on the user’s computer. Once an exploit has been successful, the user sees a popup asking them to download a file at which time malware is downloaded.
-
Social Media is another avenue criminals use to solicit donations. According to various reports, a Twitter account was created soon after the explosions that resembled a legitimate Boston Marathon account. Allegedly, for every tweet received to the account a dollar would be donated to the Boston Marathon victims.
-
Though the account was suspended by Twitter, it is likely others may use this same method to commit fraud. The FBI was made aware of at least 125 questionable domains registered within hours of the Boston Marathon Explosions. Though the intentions of the registrants are unknown, domains have emerged following other disasters for fraudulent purposes.
-
Individuals should be vigilant when using email and social networking Web sites following the Boston Marathon explosions. Based on previous disasters, cyber criminals may use this event as a means to further illegal activity to gain personally identifiable information (PII).
-
Individuals can limit exposure to cyber criminals by taking the following preventative actions when using email and social networking Web sites.
  • Messages may contain pictures, videos, and other attachments designed to infect your computer with malware. Do not agree to download software to view content.
  • Links appearing as legitimate sites (example: fbi.gov), could be hyperlinked to direct victims to another Web site when clicked. These sites may be designed to infect your computer with malware or solicit personal information. Do not follow a link to a Web site; go directly to the Web site by entering the legitimate site’s URL.
Individuals can also limit exposure to cyber criminals by taking the following preventative actions when receiving solicitations from, or donating to, charitable organizations online.
  • Verify the existence and legitimacy of organizations by conducting research and visiting official Web sites. Be skeptical of charity names similar to but not exactly the same as reputable charities.
  • Do not allow others to make the donation on your behalf. Donation-themed messages may also contain links to Web sites designed to solicit personal information, which is routed to a cyber criminal.
  • Make donations securely by using debit/credit card or write a check made out to the specific charity. Be skeptical of making donations via money transfer services as legitimate charities do not normally solicit donations using this method of payment.

If you believe you have been the victim of fraud by someone soliciting funds on behalf of disaster victims or want to report suspicious e-mail solicitations or fraudulent Web sites please file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at http://www.ic3.gov/

WHO CREATED THE "OLGA-SEZ" BLOG

-
I do not know the answer to that question, but it was not Ken Graff, he merely found this gem of literature and discontent and placed a link to it in this BLOG.
-
So, what's the big secret folks, how about telling the Residents who generated the "Channel of our Discontent"? Posting timeline analysis suggests one Gary Olman, but that is not proof, so please, someone let us know, who created the "Olga-Sez" BLOG??
-
Also , who is creating the clever legal filings for the Plaintiffs in the Solomon & Karpf Lawsuit?
-
Don't be shy, please tell us all who you are, where do you reside, are you a unit owner, are you a licensed Florida Attorney, are you a friend of Mr. Grossman??
-
No secrets; let us all in on why you won't put your name on your fine legal work.

Esther's reply

Bob, I see that you are angry, so much so that some of what you write is not clear, but you play unfair. You put your answer on Dave's blog and I cannot even respond there due to Dave's removal of my husband from the site because he thought my writings were his, so how are people to see an answer.
-
Play fair and get me on the other blog so I can post an answer to you there. I read over what Olga has on her blog - and by the way, I do not know Olga and she has no clue as to who I am either, so there is no bias here one way or the other.
-
Anyway, in reading what there is on her blog, the worst I see is that Olga calls eating with Dave worse that supping with the Devil. OK - so that is an expression, not really venomous. As for what was said verbally, as a principal I found the he said- he said accusations among the kids were actually a third version of well, we both said .
-
I am still not seeing any reason why anyone has to be mean in tone. Anger, strong words and feelings - these I can understand as we all live here and feel strongly about our home. I would even be willing to meet and talk with you all, maybe actually clear up some items, although I am afraid that the way temperatures around here are rising that it would deteriorate into a shouting match.
-
Yelling is easy. Patience and listening and trying to see the good or relevant points in another's statement shows maturity, and by the way, Olga did say that Dave has done some good things too. In any case, yelling gets us nowhere except for increasing temper tantrums and shouting at each other with no one hearing.
-
Please, for the sake of all of us, for the sake of those of us who live here, our year round home with no other place to run to, for the sake of the elderly elderly among us who cannot go anywhere - please can we all sit down , write a list to give to each other, answer in calm language, in writing so there is no yelling and no capital letter screams either.
-
Let the words and the belief behind them speak for themselves. Worth a shot? And how sad that no one will see my first post or my answer because of blockage from Dave's blog. Play fair.

My reply:
Well if supping with the devil is not a venomous reply, then I will go that route. My contempt for a hypocrite is now just a little more than I can stomach.
I am a patient man. I can even be patient with ignorance and stupidity, but my patience with a spitting peace protester is nil. I would recommend she join that church that goes to the funerals of our brave patriots to protest, but even she doesn't qualify for them.
Shame, she would fit in so well.
I consider myself a true patriot. I fought for her right to spew all the communistic rhetoric she can say. I believe in the right of free speech, the right to bear arms, to free from want, and to be represented in our government by a person of our choosing.

Reply to Esther Sutofsky RE: post on OLGA's blog

Esther, you say you want me to be civil? Tell me this, How can a person that professes to have marched for peace, come into an office and after getting a dissenting opinion on an article supposedly written by her son turn and spew filth from her mouth that would make any sailor blush, and top it off with "YOU SHOULDA DIED IN THE WAR!!!!"
-
You call that civil?  No Esther, My tone has been civil in comparison. To be civil would be showing some respect. I have no respect for Olga. I have contempt.
-
HOW DARE YOU CLAIM TO MARCH FOR PEACE AND TELL THAT TO SOMEONE THAT GAVE TWENTY YEARS OF THEIR LIFE SO YOU CAN GO ON MARCHING FOR YOUR PHONY HYPOCRITICAL  CAUSES.
-
Let me go further and give a little background... Olga came into the UCO Reporter with an article that she wanted published. An article dealing with proposed legislation to allow Pharmacists to have up to 6 Techs. Apparently the current amount one to one.
-
I asked her if she had a medical background which she denied. One of my jobs in the Navy was as a Hospital Corpsman.  I said while in the Navy, I had seen as many as ten techs to one Pharmacist without any issue.
-
I was called various names and four letter words and then the shoulda died comment.  So be civil? Nah, I don't think so.
-
Esther, you ask why am I always nasty in my words and/or tone and why insult? I will answer your question with another question... Why haven't you asked Olga the exact same thing? Especially when discussing Dave Israel?

Feline Bylaws

If an association changes its bylaws 'from one cat allowed', to 'no cats' do people who bought a unit with 'on condition that we can have cat' written in their contract have any protection. In one case they intend to rent the unit out and felt the 'cat permission' was a crucial feature.

100 BLOGGERS

-
ONE HUNDRED BLOGGERS
Have you ever been curious as to why the same people post on David Israel’s blog?  It is because his blog is limited to a membership of 100 and when this magic number has been reached you must send your post to David.
He will post it for you if he decides it is suitable. To think that a blog, which purports to represent 12,000 to 15,000 Century Village Residents, has a quota of 100 is absolutely insane.
This quota favors a small minority of David’s followers in which only their biased opinions are expressed and ultimately believed. It would be wise for you to keep this in mind when you are reading the trash from his troop.
Try to remember that many opinions expressed by his followers are not necessarily factual. In fact, many of their views are contemptible lies meant to confuse the residents. It is unfortunate that only a handful of residents can become licensed to control the voice of the blog.
Olga Wolkenstein

Their OTHER Books . . .

There is nothing like coming upon a less famous book by a great author and finding it a delightful read. Jack London’s “White Fang” and “Call of the Wild” are well known, but recently I came across his “The Road” among free books listed for the Kindle. “The Road” tells about London’s days as a hobo, riding the rails in his late teens, when there were no cars and the railroads stretched from coast to coast across the US and Canada. It’s a fascinating story. So, I found, was London’s “Tales of the Fish Patrol,” a collection of true short stories of his adventures in enforcing fishing rules and regulations off the Pacific coast.
The great Charles Dickens is probably best known for his novels “David Copperfield,” “Oliver Twist,” and “Great Expectations,” plus “A Christmas Carol"— but two others by him that I have loved are “The Old Curiosity Shop” (where there's a heroine instead of a hero) and “Dombey and Son.”

Farley Mowat, the Canadian author who writes mostly about the northern climes, is one of my favorites. He wrote “The People of the Deer,” which is a classic, and “Never Cry Wolf,” which was made into a movie. His “The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be,” “The Boat Who Wouldn’t Float,” and “Owls in the Family,” all told in his humorous style, will have you in stitches. His well-researched (Farley was the son of a librarian) “Ordeal by Ice” is the fascinating account of centuries of voyagers who sought a “Northwest Passage” from the North Atlantic Ocean to the North Pacific Ocean by water route. You may have to settle for a used copy of this book, which describes how a number of these explorers got stuck in the ice, in some cases for two, three and four years.

I could go on, but that’s enough for now. I wonder about you? Can you share on the Blog some great authors, some of whose less well-known books you found to be great reads?

SAL DERISE SAYS

-
a traffic study should be done to see if a right turn only lane at the west bound exit of Borden street could be a possible solution for the double stop sign at Borden & Century Blvd.
-
if you make the Borden street exit a right turn only, their would be minimal disruption to the residents in the north - east area, the local residents could use this exit to go to the clubhouse and points west.
-
They would still be able to enter their community from Century Blvd. but they would have to go north on Bath St to get to the east gate.
-

-
you would be able to eliminate the dangerous crossing and the stop signs on the exit lanes to the gate.-

Unmitigated Gall: The Lawsuit Against UCO

At Friday's Delegates Assembly David Israel said that the lawsuit against UCO brought by Jerry Karpf and Myron Solomon could go into mediation and ultimately to court—and that Mr. Karpf has sent a letter stating that his and Mr. Solomon’s legal costs should be paid by UCO. My mother would have called this unmitigated gall. Her term is too gentle by far.

Recently, Jerry and Myron (and assorted cohorts) were defeated when delegates voted resoundingly, 161-4, against their effort to recall David. That very same day they filed a lawsuit against UCO. The charges that failed in the recall effort were essentially the same ones in the lawsuit, but the new wrinkle was the $392,000 they were suing for, and now we have the request for UCO to pay their legal fees.

So two members of UCO are suing UCO for a ridiculous sum of money for baseless claims that delegates already rejected. And they want UCO to pay their costs for suing us. Welcome to the Theater of the Absurd. Disgruntled attention seekers creating the drama they live for. A lawsuit because they can’t figure out how to win an argument without one. A back-handed attempt to gain control of the Village without winning an election. And oh yes, let’s see how much money we can get. This would all be comical if it weren’t so sad.

Never mind that the insurance carrier for our directors & officers (D&O) insurance could jack up our rates because of the suit or drop us completely; rates would no doubt skyrocket with the next carrier. The legal fees and disruption of a pointless lawsuit could end up costing us dearly even if we were to win and they were to lose. Are we supposed to believe that these people care about the Village?

If the actors in this two-thumbs-down drama (all due respect to the late Roger Ebert) believed so much in their cause, you’d think they’d ante up their own money to pursue it. Could Mssrs. Karpf and Solomon really believe we should pay for them to sue us?

We need to hear more about our attorney’s guidance once bylaws have been reviewed and our options clarified, especially the impact our 349 delegates could have on the process.  If we get to the point that we are asked to opt in or opt out of this lawsuit brought laughingly on behalf of the Village, we should stand firm and say that we will not be a party to this travesty. In the meantime, let's do everything we can to be sure it doesn't get that far.

We have met the enemy and it is us: UCO members suing UCO and willing to go to any lengths to destroy good people and the community they themselves live in. Right-minded delegates will defeat them once again (161-4, remember?), but what a waste of time and energy.

STEAMED CLAMS

Does anyone know where you can buy steamed clams without going too far afield? I woke up this morning at 4:00 and had a hankering after some steamers—the full bodied kind, like you get on Cape Cod or in Boston, not the miniscule ones they often serve around here. You can get a plate of fried clams, the full-bodied ones, either as an appetizer or entree at Nicole's Restaurant, down on Jog, left side, beyond Lake Worth Drive, but they don't have steamers. Any suggestions?
