Battery Radio Tuning

What are the best channels to listen to weather news on a battery radio (during power outage) during storms? NOAA weather radio is 162.450 but is that AM, I cannot find it. During Wilma many stations turned on automatic music and went home, so no weather news. The PB Post listed about 35 stations!
I think you can buy special radios tuned to NOAA. Any advice. TIA.

  1. Hi all,
Ok, what we have here is a technical problem.
The NOAA weather system is broadcast on the 162Mhz band which is in the VHF spectrum.

So, you will indeed experience great difficulty tuning in on the AM band (520Khz - 1610Khz USA).

There are a wide array of radios designed for 162Mhz band reception; with digital tuning they will serve you well!

Be prepared wherever you go with the compact Microlink FR160 emergency radio. This self-powered radio can be charged with both solar power and a hand crank, giving you unlimited power for AM/FM radio, NOAA weather channels, emergency lights, cell phone battery life, and more

I got this radio from Amer. Red Cross shop online
