The Future of News on the Web

I have heard that an upstate newspaper was going to charge for Internet access soon if not now. Meanwhile, Newsday in Long Island already charges for web access to stories and features. I can read and link to Palm Beach Post online stories like this one, but the site doesn't have even its own native columnists (it does link to Jose Lambiet's "Page 2 Live," which is an expanded version of his local gossip column). If this is the future of "Pay Per News," then newspaper websites should have a two-tier system: free for regular news stories, then bring out the velvet rope and the guy with the hand out for rich material (columns, sports coverage, celebrity news, feature articles, the funnies).

  1. Not only that, I thought the online dictionaries were free BUT I GOT “ Chummery, it turns out, isn't in the free Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, where you just searched. However, it is available in our premium Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary. To see that definition in the Unabridged Dictionary, start your FREE trial now.”
Right! like I want to give away my info and then pay later, $30/yr.

  2. Hi Elaine,
    July 4, 2010 8:28 AM,

May I suggest that rather than using any particular dictionary online, that you plug the word you wish to define into the Google search window as follows:

    Chummery define

This will work with any word and many sources will be searched.

  3. Google is my silent best friend.
Everyday I pull up google and
ask whatever question I need an
    answer to and google always
    delivers.

The first law of research is "You only get the right answer if you ask the right question"
