  1. I made myself a chart to see how many days the Reporter office has had (and will have) in 2010 to work on each issue of the newspaper. This assumes that the real work starts on the 8th of each month, because it is on the 7th that articles, etc. are due. (Some articles are submitted beyond this deadline, as you may know.) It assumes the Reporter staff works Monday through Friday and not on the weekends. It makes no allowance for key personnel to be out for personal, medical, or other reasons, which of course they sometimes are.

The arrangement with our printer, who works on publications similar to ours on OTHER DAYS, is that we send him our completed UCO Reporter on a MONDAY. I have not counted this as a work day for us because transmission to the printer is often in the morning. The printer delivers the papers to us the following Thursday morning, and they are distributed the same day, although some may get delivered on Friday, I’m not sure.

As I understand it, we have a choice of Mondays each month to transmit our info to the printer so that it gets delivered before the first of the following month (the “month of issue”). Shown below are the number of days the Reporter staff has had (and will have) to work on an issue if we transmit on the last Monday versus the prior Monday. The last Monday is listed first; the prior Monday figure follows.

    January 25: 11 days
    January 18: 6 days
    February 22: 10 days
    February 15: 5 days
    March 22: 10 days
    March 15: 5 days
    April 26: 12 days
    April 19: 7 days
    May 24: 10 days
    May 17: 5 days
June 28: 14 days (delivery would be July 1)
    June 21: 9 days
    June 14: 4 days
    July 26: 12 days
    July 19: 7 days
    August 23:10 days
    August 16: 5 days
September 27: 13 days (but 2 holidays so really 11)
September 20: 8 days (but 2 holidays so really 6)
    October 25:11 days
October 18: 6 days (but really 5 due to holiday)
November 22: 10 days (delivery Fri. due to holiday)
    November 15: 5 days
    December 27 : 13 days (but really 12 due to 24th)
    December 20 : 8 days

The average number of days available to us in 2010 from the 8th of the month to the last Monday that will result in delivery before the first of the next month is 11 days. Should we back up the schedule a week, sending to the printer the prior Monday, the average number of work days would be SIX.

Check these figures if you would like to. I am open to correction.
