very big mistake

THERE IS A HUGE ERROR IN THIS ISSUE OF THE REPORTER REGARDING THE DMV COMING INTO THE VILLAGE. THE REPORTER HAS IT COMING ON NOVEMBER 1,2010 BUT IT IS COMING ON NOVEMBER11,2010. MAYBE THE FOLKS OVER THERE NEED A NEW PROOF READER. THIS IS NOT THE ONLY TIME ERRORS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE REPORTER. I HAVE BEEN GETTING CALLS AT HOME REGARDING THIS. PLEASE PASS THE WORD AROUND IF YOU CAN THAT THE DATE IS THE 11TH NOT THE 1ST. THANK YOU

  1. A 'fact checker' needs to work in conjunction with a proof reader. Readers need to be able to rely on the information published. Many take buses to these events which increases the impact of such mistakes.

  2. Yes, randall, no one knows better than us what it means for those that take our buses to get to an event that is not there.

  3. Phyllis..... How was the original information sent to the Reporter?

  4. Is it really worthy of a vice president or anyone else connected to UCO to publicly apportion blame on their fellow volunteers?
Fact is, the majority of us are willing to forgive the odd misprint in the UCO Reporter in exchange for the informative newspaper which appears monthly.

Yet given the contents of Ms. Richland's posting I was amazed it carried the mere title 'very big mistake' and not 'The Crime of the Century'.
Of course, mistakes are extremely annoying, potentially inconvenient and need to be addressed but to suggest that a the newspaper may need a new proof reader is somewhat dramatic, particularly when it comes from one who should know how it feels to be overly criticised, justified or not.
Why single out one source when it could have been the person who submitted the original copy, the printer or anyone along the production line who – Hold the Front Page , made a 'HUGE ERROR'

The irony is, the author of this highly critical post is obviously someone who has yet to understand the basics of a keyboard let alone the production of a newspaper.
At least the errant proof reader Ms. Richland chose to point her finger at 'this time', can recall the most basic of all English Lessons: names are spelt with a capital letter not a small one.

Now what was that old adage about people in glass houses?

  5. Thanks for letting us know about the mistake, Phyllis. An elderly friend of mine would have wasted her time to find out she could not re register her car. I was the one who told her she didn't need to go and wait possibly for hours to re register her car.

  6. I wish to apologize to the volunteers of the UCO Reporter for my inappropriate comment.

  7. Phyllis, your blog deserves a response from someone at the UCO Reporter. I would not normally consider myself the one to respond, and in this instance feel less so because I was not here during the prep period for the November issue. But not too many of the Reporter staff follow the blog, and I do, so perhaps I should say something.

I don’t think any of us at the shop knows where the fault lies in the November 1 for November 11 mix-up. It may be we got the information wrong in the first place; it may well be we made a typo and didn’t catch it. We don’t like missing things, and we don’t like making errors, and we know and lament the fact they can result in major inconveniences as you and others point out. We (if I may speak for others at the shop) apologize for our errors and hope to do better. We do try and will keep trying.

I like working at the shop. We have some octogenarians helping out, and my hat goes off to them putting in the effort they do at their ages. We have the lame, too. And we have some hard workers. This is true throughout the Village. Oldsters are holding the fort. Today’s septugenarian will soon be an octogenarian, I remind myself.

I can think of a couple of ideas for helping to minimize date mixups, not foolproof but maybe they would help some. One would be to encourage all who give us dates for important events to give us the day as well as the date. Of course many already do. We might catch an error more easily this way: “Wait a minute, guys, December 8 is a Wednesday not a Friday. Must be something wrong here.” Another idea would be for us to use the shop computer to check dates of events against what is on the blog. If a disparity, check it out.

I hope we can do better for you all.

  8. Well said Lanny.
It's reassuring to know that someone retained a modicum of proportion and realised that the 'UCO Reporters' 'Very Big Mistake' and 'Huge Error' didn't warrant the entire staff being being taken out to the nearest field , blindfolded and shoot.
How refreshing to learn of the obvious mutual respect and support the volunteer staff the UCO Reporter show to each other. Let's hope that others follow their example and resist the urge to jump on the bully bandwagon every time the opportunity arises.

Your ideas seem sensible and I'm certain will be warmly received. We can but anticipate that others will show the same humility and try and put their own house in order – a crash course in typing for Ms. Richland might be a good start!
