Is this the bird that makes all the noise on the lake? If it is, I hope he/she goes somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteThis bird starts yelling at 5am in the morning and also screams at night. We haven't heard him/her for a while. Maybe, he/she is waking someone else up in the village.
I am guessing he/she found a mate and that is why we haven't heard him/her.
Elaine, if you took this picture, nice photography.
ReplyDeleteHi Elaine,
ReplyDeleteOf course it is a Limpkin, check it out in Google images!
Dave Israel
Now just a Darn minute, I limp but it's no kin of mine
ReplyDeleteThx Cathy, they are all my photos in the village unless otherwise stated. That constant squawk was the worst, I was glad not to live on the waterfront. It was quiet while at the clubhouse 2 days ago - green water.
ReplyDeleteHi all,
ReplyDeleteActually, the Limpkin call is quite haunting, and if you have ever seen a movie about Florida, you have probably hear this call, as directors insert it often.
I believe, In the US, Florida is the only place they are found.
See the following URL, and play the call:

Dave, your bird has an echo chamber sound enhancer, there may be loud, wailing, haunting vocalizations that echo through the night in Florida swamps.
ReplyDeleteBut when it is harsh guttural non-stop from lonely teen bird and few yards from where you sit at the pool it causes violent thoughts.
Hi Elaine,
ReplyDeleteAugust 28, 2011 7:44 PM,
I have heard these birds at night, not unlike a distant train whistle, the call of these Limpkins help me get to sleep.
You must have done something to irritate your Limpkin!
Dave Israel
My neighbors feel the same way I feel. We also like to strangle the bird. How could you sleep with such a sound. I don't really wish it any harm, but just want it to go away.
ReplyDeleteDavid, you may be the only one that can sleep when you hear the sound of the limpkin.
