Waterfront Protection

Looking good, where waterfront associations follow UCO and Florida Friendly Landscaping guidelines. i.e. One of the most important steps you can take to protect any water body is maintaining a 10-foot “maintenance-free zone” around it. Do not mow, fertilize, or use pesticides in this zone. Don’t let any grass clippings or pet wastes get into the water, as these carry nutrients and harmful bacteria. The UCO Reporter also had info on protecting the geotubes with sod.

  1. hi all, i do believe that the water experts suggest a 5 foot area not 10 feet. we at somerset k have our maint.co. keep to the 5 ft. line and it looks great.

  2. I think our CV advisors are starting us off gently with 5'. Pick any number, FDEP, FFL and the University of Florida recommend 10'. The no fertilizer zone is definitely 10'. New development near state water needs buffers of 25' -150' !

  3. Whichever is right, your photos are making the point about this for us, I think, Elaine. It's hard to adjust to new ideas such as the need for such a strip. I read about it, but as they say, A picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks. You are Johnny-on-the-Spot as usual!

  4. !0 feet sounds good to me. Why would we want fertilizer pollutants entering the water?
