Thank you, Dave. What a THRILL! This is ballet within opera. Just magnificent.
ReplyDeleteI love the Met, as I think you know. I envy you having been able as a youngster to attend Met performances. The best I could do up in Boston was to listen to the Met on the radio Saturday afternoons. The sponsor was Texaco for many years; now it is that company that builds plush homes—-I can't think of the name right now.
You probably know that the Regal Theater in Royal Palm Beach shows some Met productions on the big screen AS THEY OCCUR (simulcast), plus quite often the same thing a week or more later, usually on a Wednesday evening. I enjoy them as do many others. It's great, because (1) they zero in on the most interesting action, and (2) they take you backstage during the intermissions, where opera divas in their own right (Beverly Sills used to do it, now it’s often Renee Fleming) interview the principals (singers and conductor) and let you see how the huge sets are moved about. As you probably know, they have a marvelous rotating stage now, which saves on intermission time.
Thank you! This was an unexpected treat!
The Toll Brothers is the name of their main radio sponsor now. It just came to me.
ReplyDeleteHaving lived in NYC for 62 years, I was privileged to have attended many operas and other performances at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. But my first opera was The Dialogue of the Carmelites at Manhattanvile College many, many years ago. The beginning of a great love affair.
ReplyDeleteFantastic, Dave! You changed the Aida piece somewhat. Everyone should watch this AND watch and listen to some of the stuff following it. There are those flash performances from all over and auditions where the most unlikely singers surprise everyone--just some fabulous stuff. Thanks, Dave. You don't know what you're missing if you don't watch some of this!
