Setting The Record Straight

I would like to set the record straight on a blurb on the other blog. Stewart Richland was not present when the conversation transpired between Phyllis and myself to allow your then very underage granddaughter to stay in guest and wine storage condo in the association where I live. When I said I could not sign to allow your granddaughter to stay here Phyllis told me she would then sign the paper herself as she was a Vice President at the time. I was new to the job and felt pushed into the corner and signed. I told Phyllis I was surprised that a Vice President would ask me to break the condo by laws for her granddaughter. She did not reply. I would never vote for a President of UCO that would break a by law to suit her cause.

BREAKING A FAST

For a little over a year now, I haven’t read the “opposition” blogs, but with the UCO elections heating up, I decided I’d break my fast for a while.

I thought maybe the malcontents (even they use the term now of themselves; it doesn’t have to be a pejorative) might have softened their language somewhat, if for no other reason than to appear reasonable and sane to the electorate. Not so at all! I couldn’t believe what I read: They were still likening Dave Israel, who served in the NSA for 30 years, to Hitler; still using the grossest terms to describe him; and now attacking the “silent ones” in UCO, including the ever-helpful Dom Guarnagia!

Apparently they think the “silent ones” fail to speak up for them and their causes. They don’t seem to consider the fact the “silent ones” might be biting their tongues that would otherwise express criticism of the malcontents. Dom had the courtesy to respond to their charge, his response including (surprise, surprise) some of the latter—criticism of them.

Being silent isn’t necessarily being cowardly. There is a time for everything: “A time to be silent and a time to speak,” Ecclesiastes tells us. There is very little of which we know all the details of personalities and events sufficient to justify relentless harsh criticism and scorn.

I was amazed to read one person’s New Year’s resolution on forgiveness. I thought he was going to ask forgiveness for something he had done. Instead, he cited a litany of things HE will forgive (who else?) Dave Israel for! (Really, it sounded rather like the Almighty himself doing all this forgiving!) When one cites a list of grievances that long that one is forgiving, guess what gets emphasized? You guessed it: not the forgiveness, but the grievances.

I’m not sure if I made the right decision to open this can of worms…..

“A CHRISTMAS CAROL”

Presented by the Act II Community Theater, December 21 at 7:00 p.m.

It’s coming very soon: The Act Two Community Theater's presentation of their version of Charles Dickens’ beloved story “A Christmas Carol.”

Included will be the Act Two Singers and the Strictly Ballroom Dancers.

Away up north for a good part of the summer and fall, I missed a major Act Two production and didn’t see any of their rehearsals until the other evening when I popped in to Classroom C. They were rehearsing with a vengeance for “A Christmas Carol,” sitting (not acting at this rehearsal) at tables in a U shape with the maestro, Kitty Gragg, at the head. They were learning their lines, and Kitty was cracking the whip from time to time. (It was needed.)

I realized I hadn’t had a good laugh for a while, because I immediately cracked up watching these friends, our neighbors whom I’ve come to know, practice. They’re so enthused, it’s catching, and this was only a practice session, not the real thing. It was like a tonic to my soul. For example, Maureen Debigare, who is codirecting for this performance, was going from actor to actor, whispering this and that—advice I guess. But Maureen (she was Cinderella, remember?) doesn't just walk—she "flits about" like a butterfly with a certain waving of her arms, a performance in itself.

I won’t give away too much, but I’ll tell you this much: the talented Steve Mussman is Scrooge, and the irrepressible Rhoda Weber, who can rescue any situation from failure, a handy talent to have on tap, narrates. Graggs and Graffs were there, Kitty directing as I mentioned, and John, in addition to his other duties, for the first time taking a speaking part in a performance (he has three lines). Ken Graff is photographing and videotaping, of course, and Linda Graff plays a part.

A suggestion: When John is finished saying his three lines, give him a big hand. Don’t worry about “interrupting”—they interrupt operas (not an aria or speaking part itself, though) with applause nowadays and the action just stops momentarily.

I will mention only one other person who was there because I haven’t mentioned her before: Cindy Reavis. You don’t see Cindy except at the curtain call. She is backstage very busy making sure the players make the right change of costumes and a hundred other things. She is one of Act Two's “unsung heroes.”

Come early if you want to get a seat. There have been overflow crowds in the past and some, unfortunately, have had to be turned away. The performance starts at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 21, in Classroom C in the Clubhouse.

Enjoy!

DELEGATES TO CONSIDER BYLAW AMENDMENT - WHAT IS IT'S REAL PURPOSE

-
The Malcontents have brought forward an Amendment to the UCO Bylaws. The entire item may be read on Page A6 of the December issue of the UCO Reporter.
-
The poison pill in this Amendment is contained in the following snippet:
-
"The Executive Board, after due deliberation, shall either approve or disapprove the amendment proposal as presented. The proposal shall then be published in the next issue of the UCO Reporter, and shall then be read and considered by the Delegate  Assembly at the meeting following its publication."
                                       -
the current Bylaw allows the proposed Amendment to expire, if it is rejected by the Executive Board, thus preventing the bogging down of the Delegate Assembly with endless repetitive, frivolous Amendments.
                                      -
So, what is the true purpose of this Amendment? Clearly it is to amplify the ability of this small group of disruptive people to continue their disruptive behavior at our Delegate Assembly meetings.
                                     -
In light of the forgoing, I ask the Delegates to attend in great numbers and reject this Amendment at the meeting on Friday, December 4th. Send the disrupters a clear message.

TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT

INTERNET USER, BEWARE!
I wouldn't be writing this except that the other day I looked up my own name on Google. There was a lineup of photos of several guys with the name of Lanny Howe, none of them me and all of them better looking.

But about three entries below this there I was, no photo but linked with a December 25, 2013 issue of "My Village Blogger" and a post addressed to me by the infamous "Eduardo" of 2-3 years ago. "Eduardo" proceeds to rake me over the coals with such assertions as "you choke, sneer, wheeze and expel [two words deleted] when you’re asked to respond intelligently to someone else’s opinions" and (in capital letters) "YOU, LANNY HOWE, NEED TO BE FIRED FROM THE UCO REPORTER!"

Well, that was all right, although I have to say it sounded like a frustrated fourth-grader lashing out and didn't display quite the imagination of Olga's denunciation of nine of us as "bigoted cockroaches." Fortunately for me, I guess, the longsuffering coeditors of the Reporter keep me on.

As I read on, however, I discovered that Gary Olman, the "blogmeister," had printed a response by me to this post. But it wasn't a response by me! First of all, I had never before even seen this post. Second, I had certainly never responded to it.  And third, I know how I write and this was not me! It read like a fourth-grader's attempt to sound like me, partially succeeding for a few lines but then—unable to keep his own personality in check—yielding to it and ending with a threat of "revenge."

What I am suggesting is simply this. Don't trust Gary's blog for ANYTHING, including supposed responses to what is posted. It is one thing to voice your own opinions making false allegations and using vile language. It's another to make up fictitious responses as by the infamous "Eduardo" or the three people who (when it served the interests of the "malcontents") supposedly responded in support of Wi-Fi within two minutes of each other at 6:00 a.m. (Give me a break!)

It is beyond reprehensible, however, to make up a response and attribute it to a real person. Only a person lacking in any scruples and wanting to stir up controversy where there is none does this.

Internet user, beware. This kind of stuff goes on all over the Internet a LOT. It's sad to have it happen among us in Century Village by people we know.

UNIT OWNERS AND CENTURY VILLAGE DEVELOPER SUE MAJORITY UNIT OWNER DONALD T. KELLY

-By Tony Doris - Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Nine unit owners in a Century Village condo building have sued another owner who they say has tried to wrest control of the building, change its rules and bring in renters, including youngsters not eligible to live in the retirement community.
The unit owners are backed by the 80-something developer of the complex, H. Irwin Levy, who promised in July that he would use his resources to protect them from Palm Beach Gardens investor Donald Kelly, who bought most of the units in their Sheffield O building and gained the voting power to preside over its association.

The kicker: Kelly, as association president, might have his legal expenses covered by Century Village’s officers and directors liability insurance.
“So we in effect are defending the black knight,” said David Israel, president of United Civic Organization, which oversees the sprawling, 600-building development. “It makes my skin crawl.”
Kelly previously declined comment on the dispute. His attorney, Richard S. Cohen, could not be reached for comment.
Kelly bought about 15 of the Sheffield O’s 26 condo units and obtained an interest in about two more. The suit, filed Nov. 2, alleges he wrongly contends he has the right to change the condo rules and lease out his units, which allegedly would reduce the value of the remaining units by more than $15,000.
“To the extent that Kelly purports to modify the condominium covenants and bylaws, such that they no longer guarantee the long-standing and established retirement neighborhood scheme, Kelly would deprive the affected unit owners of the very lifestyle they were promised when they purchased their respective units,” the suit says.
Changes to those covenants require approval from the other owners and of WPRF Inc., the corporation, controlled by Century Village developer H. Irwin Levy and his son, Mark, that manages the community’s recreation facilities, the suit says. Kelly doesn’t have those approvals, it says.
The lead plaintiff in the case, condo owner Nancy Salmi, 71, helped bring the issue to light several months ago, after investor Kelly sent her a letter saying he intended to buy her unit.
“I am in the process of taking steps to dissolve the Association of Sheffield O whereby all of the apartments that I do not own would be forced to sell to me at the Palm Beach County Appraisers value,” Donald T. Kelly, wrote to Salmi on March 2.
She was happy to learn in July that the investor — after Levy pledged to step in — dropped those plans. But the lawsuit says Kelly then went ahead and retroactively changed rules to legitimize renting his condos.
The lawsuit aims to reverse the rule changes and prevent forced sales at unfair prices.
Kelly’s alleged attempt to force sales, “goes beyond all bounds of decency and is odious and utterly intolerable in a civilized community,” the suit says. His conduct, it says, has caused “severe emotional distress.”
The suit also alleges that Kelly breached his fiduciary duty to the Sheffield O Condominium Association. If that’s true, the liability insurance company might rule he is not eligible for coverage, says Joy Vestal, a member of the United Civic Organization board of directors.
Either way, says UCO president Israel: “It’s problematic over there: underage people, short-duration rentals — everything most of us came here not to have.”

THANK YOU, BOB MARSHALL

As we approach the end of the year, it is natural to think back and muse. When I read Dave Israel's article in the November Reporter, he described how he got thinking back to when he came to the Village and became an association president. This reminded me of our "quiet" UCO vice president, Bob Marshall.

The two good friends (Bob and Dave) have reversed positions now. Bob was UCO president when he appointed Dave to a committee, and for a time he was president when Dave was a vice president.

Bob's tenure as president was shorter than Dave's, but Bob had a lot to contend with. Not one, not two, but three hurricanes that hit us dead-on and caused a great amount of damage in the Village. Who among us who were here during those days will forget them? The Clubhouse was virtually destroyed, and the UCO building was destroyed. UCO operations were squeezed in with the UCO Reporter next to the Camden Pool.

Our condos suffered untold damage. The roofs on many buildings were in sad shape, and so when Hurricane Frances came along, the roofs took a beating. That was in the fall of 2004. Only weeks later when we had barely begun to recover, Jeanne came along. The temporary replacement roof our condo association had put up was almost completely blown off. With Jeanne, a Category 3 hurricane, came the blue tarps from FEMA, a lifesaver. A year later Hurricane Wilma hit us. The Clubhouse was still being repaired and refurbished under the capable leadership of Jean Dowling, but most of our condos were in better shape with new roofs. So we withstood Wilma better.

Foodstuffs were distributed, do you remember? A tractor-trailer with such items would pull into the medical center parking lot.

We have Bob Marshall to thank for bringing us through those days as UCO president. With a breather of one or two years, he has since then been a UCO vice president. Now he serves under Dave, whom he supervised years before. Bob doesn't make a lot of noise—and unfortunately he has been unjustly criticized, even ridiculed, for this—but he gets things done, and he's patient. Those who come to him for help, and there are many, know they will get a hearing and help based on long experience. Nor is Bob in the best of health, though he will say he is "excellent." He paces himself.

We are very, very lucky to have had such a person in leadership positions at UCO. I take my hat off to him in thanks and wish him all the best.
