Snails climbing up outside wall

For about two months now, snails have been climbing up the front face of one of our association’s buildings. First floor only. They are knocked off during the weekly cleanings, but return.

I asked our maintenance company manager about the problem and they said it is the first they have heard of such a thing.

Is any other association experiencing such a thing and did you come up with a solution?

Thank you.

  1. In the NW corner of CV we have had those tree snails on our walls for at least 2 years. Gallagher treated them but I do not know with what. They are numerous and do make a mess when you tread on them. You could try Ortho Snails and Slugs stuff - or from internet You might try sprinkling earth with sand, oyster shell, anything a bit gritty, fresh coffee grounds, or diatomaceous earth, or salt, or shallow dishes of beer, where they approach. I tried bleach, no good.

  2. Yes, Mike, we have had them for a few months at Sheffield N. It could be they have migrated from Elaineb's buildings to yours and ours.

  3. SNAIL CHOWDER

Or another idea. I just had one of the best cups of fish chowder in my life at a restaurant in Falmouth, MA, on Cape Cod. I swear I'd drive 25 miles out of my way for just a bowl of that. Now snails are pretty smart, I've been told. If Elaineb could make up a real tasty snail chowder and leave a steaming pot of it out where the live snails could see and smell it, I'll bet they would take their activities somewhere else. I can imagine the dad snail saying: "Look, Junior, this could happen to you. Better get a move on with your mom and me."

If it worked, you and I could do the same, although we might need the recipe from Elaineb. Dave Israel might have some ideas on this subject, too. Besides being an expert on communications, he's very knowledgeable about the culinary arts.

  4. The snail chowder could be called "Escargo-going-gone" if you should be in want of a name for it, Elaineb.

  5. Hi Mike,
    Contact Seacrest as follows:

    Hi Dave,
yes, snail bait that would go around the perimeter of the building. Do you know which building this was that was asking? I'm not seeing it on the blog unless I missed it.

    Thanks.

    1. Shauna - the building is Camden H. Our association president sent you an email from Canada, on October 8th to start the remedy process.

I was copied on the email. As far as I know, and I am on the board, no action was taken as a result of the request. Prior to the association president contacting you, I contacted Chris about the issue. Didn't here any for a while and when I asked Chris about it he told me Lenny is talking to Joe about it, so I went to Home Depot, bought and applied two boxes of Cory's snail repellant for roughly 240 liner feet of affected area. Thank you.
