USS SCORPION SINKS - MAY 22, 1968

This post in memory on the 51st anniversary of the sinking of the USS-Scorpion.

USS Scorpion (SSN-589) was a Skipjack-class nuclear submarine of the United States Navy and the sixth vessel of the U.S. Navy to proudly carry that name. Scorpion was lost on 22 May 1968 under mysterious circumstance, with 99 crewmen dying in the incident.

  1. Thank you for this post, Dave, and the reminder that freedom does not come cheap. I have only a dim memory of the Scorpion disaster. Where was she when this happened so mysteriously? Is there a good book on it I could read?

    Scorpion was some 700 miles off the Atlantic coast headed for refit at Norfolk. Here is a book for reference:
