Century Village FISH KILL REVISITED

LEFT CLICK TO SUPERSIZE

-

BLOGGER Alan Roth has researched the recent Century Village Fish Kill at the Florida Wildlife Research Institute Site. Alan States:
-
"Although several reports have been filed, the disaster is being blamed on a cold front which lowered the O2 level in the water. In any case I have been informed that there will be no Florida water testing of our lake as we are a private entity not open to the public."
-
I find this response from FWRI unsatisfying, as our lakes empty over a weir into the Lake Worth Drainage District; and thence by circuitous route to Lake Okeechobee.

Interesting, if not dispositive; my only remaining question, does the sprayed substance contain Rotenone; a know piscicide, selective for Threadfin Shad, (I believe the only identified species in our Century Village event); leaving other species unharmed.

Thanks for the fine research Howard.

  1. You have to pick up dispositives in a plastic bag and put them in the nearest dumpster.

  2. How come the fish kill took place mainly in specific lakes or lagoons? There were almost none in Wellington except those floating in from Berkshire lake? Pres. UCO mentionned at the delegate meeting that overcrowding of shad!! was the cause? who is right? Who did the water analysis? Andre

  3. Hi Andre,
    December 5, 2009 9:38 AM,

There were a number of possible causes cited, Cold Front, stirred up silt, spawning, Low Dissolved Oxygen.

The Executive Board was briefed on this by a contractor representitive; it is the contractor who did any analysis that was done; I am not aware of any governmental agency testing on our lakes in this incident.

  4. The following info was given to the Executive Cmte and Prez Loewenstein.
There is now mostly agreement on the reasons for fish kill - lack of dissolved oxygen (DO), Florida Fisheries and Wildlife, Lakes & Waterways (WPRF contractor) say cloudy weather (less photosynthesis, less oxygen), hardly any water plants (less oxygen), colder weather, torrential rain washed crud, fertilizer, and weed killer into lakes, + turbidity from construction.

Prez GL gave different info at the Delegate Mtg. I suppose the village needs short simple answers.

I think it is apparent to anyone who was looking that the shoreline activity was the straw that broke the shad back, otherwise there would have been fish kills outside CV. There is nothing wrong with telling the truth that our retention ponds are vulnerable because all the vegetation is sprayed out of existence.
We could use heavy duty fountain oxygenators, our ornamental spray fountains add little oxygen.
