HBO ANALOG CHANNELS 27 AND 28 TO BE PULLED
Hi all,
We are advised by Comcast that the HBO channels 27 and 28 will be removed early Monday, 17 May 2010. It is probable that the channels will be taken down in selected areas until all are removed.
I would like to bring to your attention that the Comcast offer, as noted in our contract, for all HBO channels at a cost of $5.71 per month per unit which includes taxes and fees, is still an option, if accepted by the Delegates.
This matter will be brought forward again when our 2011 budget build starts. It will be the last opportunity for this offer, as it expires mid 2011.
The Comcast HBO lineup looks like this:
301 – HBO HD
302 – HBO
303 – HBO 2
304 – HBO Signature
305 – HBO Family
306 – HBO Comedy
307 – HBO West
311 – HBO Zone
312 - HBO Latino

Is it possible that a motion could be made to accept the offer at $5.71 per month per unit at the next DA?
ReplyDeleteHi Ken,
ReplyDeleteMay 12, 2010 8:21 PM,
There is one small problem, the $5.71/month/unit works out to about $44.8K per month which we do not have.
This will have to be built into the 2011 budget and thus could not even start until January; unless the funds are diverted from elswhere. The Treasurer would have to find the funds and then the DA would have to approve the diversion.
As I recall, this issue has come to the floor of the DA twice, and was twice defeated.

I understand & Thnx
ReplyDeleteAccording to our 2010 budget, each of our condo units (no matter the size) is now paying $16.53, including taxes, per month for cable TV. As I understand it, our Comcast contract calls for a 10% increase in cost each year for the remaining 9 years of the contract.
ReplyDeleteOur folks would thus be paying $1.65 more per unit per month in 2011 for cable TV (total $18.18) if the Village chose to NOT take on the 9 HBO channels. If the Village chose TO take on the 9 HBO channels, each unit's cable TV cost would have increased by $7.36 for 2011 (total $23.89/month).
I will be interested in finding out how our owners feel about this. It's important to keep in mind that getting the 9 HBO channels for the $5.71 rate is a one-time deal we must decide upon shortly.
Dave, do you know how much it will cost individually?
ReplyDeletePersonally I think $5.71/mo is a great deal. That is less than the price of 2 gallons of gas. I know that many people said we don't need HBO because they never watch it, but on the other hand many people do and they should be considered also when it comes to providing programing for the Village.
ReplyDeleteHi Grace,
ReplyDeleteMay 13, 2010 8:53 AM,
If you sign up on your own, the cost is nearly $16.00 per month.

Hi Lanny,
ReplyDeleteMay 13, 2010 12:13 AM,
Your numbers need recomputing, as the $16.53 is a result of an offset by our doorway fee.
The actual rate this year is $22.95, plus nearly 15% for taxes and fees.
Finally, please note that the yearly increase is capped at 5%;
Thus our rate for 2011 will be $22.95 plus the 5% delta of $1.15 for a grand total of $24.10, plus taxes and fees close to 15%.
Now if HBO is approved by the Delegates, the additional $5.71 would bring the total to: $29.81, plus taxes and fees close to 15%
This is a discount of over 55% from Off-Campus rates.

Either way , The new cable contract is a great deal for the village. Congrats Dave and committee.
ReplyDeleteWhen we got HBO originally were we paying extra for itand did we vote on it in the general asssembly? Lat time HBO came for a vote it was voted down by delegates who don't watch it and probably don't consult their buildings. If we paid for it before why not put it into the budget for next year and just continue what we had?
ReplyDeleteGrace, putting as a line item only raises our fees, why not let those that want it get it on their own.
ReplyDeleteI think $5.71 per month for all the HBO channels is a very good deal! I hope it's a go.
ReplyDeleteIf the HBO channels were to be adopted, would the yearly fee percentage increase apply to the total of services or just to basic cable?
ReplyDeleteDavid
ReplyDeleteCorrect me if I am wrong but
according to your post you posted
that it will be $44,846.34 per
month and if it went to a vote
by delegates and they approve
it then the cost would be
$538,156.08 per year. That
is a lot of money for HBO.
Hi Bill k,
ReplyDeleteMay 14, 2010 9:08 PM,
The 5% increase per year applies to the entire monthly charge.
Our package consists of Basic Cable, expanded Basic and Digital Starter tiers.
If HBO were added in any given year, the next increase would occur on the anniversary of the contract inception, which is in July.

Hi Nut,
ReplyDeleteMay 14, 2010 9:24 PM,
Yes, it is a big number, because we are discussing service to 7854 accounts.

Hi Grace,
ReplyDeleteMay 14, 2010 9:07 AM,
We originally had 3 of the available 8 HBO channels.
They were part of the old Adelphia contract and were provided as an incentive to sign with Adelphia; thus the cost was included in the contract.
With the signing of the new contract with Comcast, it was decided to drop HBO in order to minimize the overall cost to CV, but Comcast offered an option in the first two years of our new contract to pick up all HBO channels for $5.00 plus taxes and fees.
If this option is exercised, it requires 90 days notice. The option expires on the second anniversary of the contract, which is July 2011.

No more $ add-ons please, no more fee creep. SIGs can buy their own, Showtime, HBO, sports, golf, whatever.

Elaine, I'm with you, NO MORE increases!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAS A DELEGATE, I SAY NO TO THE ADDITION OF HBO. WITH INSURANCE GOING UP YEARLY, OUR MAINTENANCE FEES WILL BE HIGHER YEAR AFTER YEAR. THOSE WHO WISH TO GET HBO CAN DO SO ON THEIR OWN AT A CHEAPER RATE. CHECK IT OUT.
ReplyDeleteThere are many things in Century Village that I do not use but I pay for it anyway. The difference being I knew it when I bought my condo. This thing with HBO sounds wonderful but I don't use HBO and I should not be forced to pay for it. If you want something, PAY FOR IT YOURSELF, Call Comcast I am sure they will give you a deal, they usually do. Pass a survey out at the next Delegate meeting so that you can get an idea other than delegates who might be in favor of this. Wait until wintertime when all the snowbirds are back. Stop pushing things through when they are not here. They are at least 50% of Century Village give them a vote too!!!NO MORE $ PLEASE.
ReplyDeleteAs a condo association president, I send an "update" letter out to all owners in the spring and fall (and as otherwise needed). In the spring 2010 letter I'll be telling them about the HBO possibility for $5.71 per unit per month more and asking for feedback. I have already posted this on the bulletin board (which snowbirds won't see, of course) and will be e-mailing board members about it. I don't seek the opinion of owners on everything by any means, but on this I think I will—and vote accordingly.
ReplyDeleteWhen is this likely to come up for a vote, by the way, Dave?
