ReplyDeleteSecurity: The hundreds of workers, health aides, delivery drivers, guests, renters, etc. Wireless is inherently less secure than wired: How to prevent Century Village WiFi from being a prime target for hackers.
The last pages - the recommendations - are thoughtful and expert. Especially getting a major Internet provider's bid, with details, to at least establish a baseline.
Hi Old Nassau '67,
ReplyDeleteOctober 28, 2013 at 9:21 PM,
1)Signal will be available within each apartment and accessible via wireless devices within unit, EG: lap-top, desk-top, kindle, WiFi enabled phones...!
Baseline speed limit will be 4Mbit down/1Mbit upstream. The Router will be programmable for higher speed, but there will be additional cost for more bandwidth.
2) We will be using WiFi Protected Access II WPA2. This is a high grade security protocol providing more than sufficient protection.
3)Major providers have been approached, EG. AT&T, Comcast, Meraki/Cisco, Hotwire Communications.
All have said not interested.
We have a few other ideas, and we will try again for additional providers.

If you have WiFi and your computer is locked down you will not be hacked. You can get hacked even without WiFi if you are not locked down. I have WiFi in my condo and have not been hacked as my computer is locked down. I have used WiFi in airports and other places with no problems. Don't let the fear mongers get to you. WiFi is not the future it is now. WiFi is almost everywhere but not yet in the Village. Delegates, vote for WiFi and keep our Village in the forefront.
