Major League Ball Park Down The Road

Has anyone thought of the impact of having a major league baseball park down the road? I hazard a guess Haverhill Road, when the ball park is in use will be impossible. I would be happier if they found another site. PS I am not a baseball fan but even if I were I still don't want them down the road.

  2. Hi Grace,
Well, I know our resident sports writer Irwin Cohen is excited about it. He wants to be there when the teams play. He says the park will be open in two years and is 3 miles up the road on Haverhill. I'm not good on distances, but that would put the park somewhere north of Roebuck, wouldn't it? Haverhill only GOES as far as Route 710, the Beeline Highway, so it would have to be somewhere south of there, west or east side of Haverhill--I'm guessing west.

The traffic to there wouldn't affect us if turning off Haverhill onto Community. If going up to Roebuck, maybe. But to watch professional baseball close at hand? It'd be well worth it, Grace. I hope to see you at a game! I'll TAKE you to a game with a hot dog thrown in if I can still hobble about it in two years!

Aha! I see Plcruise says it is at 45th Street. Well, that's nearer than I thought, but it's a dream to have a major-league ballpark in your backyard! C'mon, Grace, become a FAN!

  3. I think its a done deal for the Spring Training park at 45th and Haverhill, unless some last minute issue develops. All this activity makes Reflection Bay very likely despite the last ditch lawsuit by some Southhamption people

  4. Sorry not a baseball fan. I am a hockey fan. The traffic along Haverhill by fans going to the game will be so much more than we have now at rush hour.

  5. Of course, coming from Canada, you're a hockey fan, Grace. Okay, okay, but I'll bet if it was a hockey rink they were building up there and the Canadiens were playing, you'd like the idea.

  6. Lanny:
FYI in Montreal, they don't build Hockey rinks...they build Sports Arena's, which house other indoor sports as well & usually are near commercial areas, accessible via public transportation..Unless they have such plans in store for N Haverhill/Bee Line HWay, this ball park could impact upon us...not everyone will use 95 or the pike..coming from the south..

  7. It's called progress. Without it we'd still be riding horses and ox carts.

  8. No I would not Lanny! When my son and family lived in Loxahatchee and the children were small I would baby sit now and then. Coming home in rush hour traffic along Haverhill from the Bee Line took me close to an hour a few times. Now take the rush hour traffic and multiply by ball fans. Have fun Lanny!

  9. Betti in Montreal there are indoor arenas and hundreds of outdoor rinks. I watched many of my two sons hockey games outdoors in below zero weather. As a child I skated on various outdoor rinks. There are still many hundreds of outdoor rinks as well as arenas.

  10. We lived on a pond in MA when my kids were growing up, and when it iced over they would skate on it. Two of my boys became good hockey players. One went to Montreal with a bunch of his buddies, played a Canadian semi-pro team there, and won! It was probably a fluke. Rink or sports arena, I was only joking about having one on Haverhill.

  11. I believe the subject related to
"Professional" sports, not recreational and my explantion was in conjunction with that...No doubt changes have occured since my early days(departed Mtl in 1957)however I do not believe the "rink's you refer to are for major team's usage...
Do correct me if I'm wrong(Grace)Thank you..

  12. You are right Bettie. The Canadians use the Bell Centre downtown. All the communities have rec centres and indoor and outdoor rinks. I lived in TMR and we had and and still have an indoor rink. I believe Ville St-Laurent and Westmount have indoor arenas for their community use.

  13. Attention Lanny: If Grace turns you down you can take me instead. I need to spend some time with you in order to explain that not all of us us Canadians are into the Canadiens, some of us are from Toronto and its "Go Leafs Go"!!!!

  15. Why, thank you, Roz F. I would be honored, but there IS quite a lineup of offers now, and we have to wait for this exciting new stadium to get built. Yes, of course I have heard of the Toronto Mapleleafs. Canada has had great hockey teams over the years, including of course the Edmunton Oilers with "the Great One," the incomparable Wayne Gretsky. But let's not forget the Boston Bruins, for I am from Boston and remember vividly the old Bobby Orr-Phil Esposito days. Bobby changed hockey. No one knew what a defenseman could do till he came around. His patented end-to-end rushes were something to see. And my namesake, Gordie Howe, who played for the Detroit Red Wings (they're ALMOST in Canada), who played in five decades.

Guess I'd better stop with this sports talk, or Sam Milham will be complaining I'm taking his job away from him.

  16. Hi again Larry, first, if you have had a lot of offers, you really should be handing out numbers, you have to be fair about these things :)

Sorry...... of course you know all about Canadian hockey teams. I made a typo, I didn't mean all Canadians, I meant to say not all CENTURY VILLAGE Canadians are into the Canadiens!!
