For snowbirds, it would be nice to have a couple of outside webcams of CV where we could see our Village live and the current weather.

hdtv/comcast question

a friend wants to give me an HDTV - I have what I call a regular tv now with comcast regular digital cable package with some extra channels ----digital converter box ----and the little box for the tv in bedroom ----before I call comcast - I would like to know the correct answer so comcast doesn't try to sell me something I don't need -----will I need to get a some sort of new hdtv box ----or can I just use the new hdtv without changing the box I have?  I am not such a tv geek that I am concerned about upgrading anything - but my friend insists my current tv is just too small a screen considering my bad eyesight and wants to do something nice for me ---thanks, hoping my garbled explanation makes sense

Board Certification Class

As you may be aware, Board members must take a condominium Board certification class or sign a document indicating that they have read all of their governing documents and will faithfully uphold them. When I teach the Board Certification Classes at the Century Village Theater they are always held in the morning. For those interested in taking a Board Certification Class next week in the evening, we will be holding a small class of no more than 30 Board members on Wedneday, October 17, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the West Palm Beach Office of Becker and Poliakoff. Our office is approximately 15 mintues from Century Village. If you have already taken the class and there has been no lapse in your term of office you are not required to retake the class. However, anyone wishing to take a refresher class as the new season begins is welcome to do so. Any Board member interested in attending should contact my assistant, Eileen Durrance at Phone: 561-655-5444.

Every year up north the leaves start to turn color and the snows start to accumulate. Here in Century Village neither one of these phenomenon occur. We do have a yearly event though..... the election of UCO officers and executive board members.

 

Yes the time is here to send me, via e mail, your bios. This year we elect two vice presidents and ten executive board members. All bios, without exception, must be sent to me at my e mail address........ rgwlbf@gmail.com.. I will acknowledge receipt of it. If you do not get a receipt, try again.

 

The maximum number of words is 250 with the following guidelines:

     Name and address

     Education

     UCO and village exprience

     Related qualifications.

 

Remember executive board members must reside in the Village a minimum of nine months each year, you must volunteer to serve on two committees and membership in UCO must be current. Officers also must be a current member in UCO and be domiciled in Century Village for not less than nine months each year.

 

It's never too early to send your information to me. If you have any questions, do not hesitate mailing them. Instead of complaining about what goes on in Century Village (for or against any issue) become an integral member of the executive board or a vice president and be instrumental in being heard.

How Many WiFi devices do you have?

Might want to update Survey. to:  How Many WiFi devices do you have?
1. I have a computer that I use to watch Netflix on and all other  things computer, BUT,
2. I have a Kindle (eBook reader to read eBooks and uses WiFi to download eBooks
3. iPad to use the internet and watch Podcast's on. (short tech free tech video's), check my email.  Watch Netflix movies.
4. iPod Touch a small pocket device, the size of a cell phone.  That also keeps track of my contacts and lists of birthdays, also also           lets  me read eBooks.

All of these devices use the WiFi network

Wi-Fi surveys still needed

I just want to let everyone know that the Wi-Fi Ad Hoc committee is still looking for more surveys to be completed and returned.  The surveys were not just for getting the item added to the budget but to help the Ad Hoc committee for the Wi-Fi to br able to bring in the service that best fits the needs of the community.

Copies of the surveys are available at the Clubhouse, at Hastings, at UCO and via this blog.  They can be turned into UCO or e-mailed to ucopresident@gmail.com. 

Just a few things to remember.  The survey must be completed for each unit not one for the entire building or association.  We received a couple surveys that stated their building had been surveyed and all wanted to say one thing but individual surveys have come in from the same building that are of the opposite opinion.

We also need a unit address at the top.  If there is no unit named, it does not help us in providing the best service.  We need to know where the high usage areas are to start so that we can bring in a system that handles the needs of today while also planning for the future.

Question About Wi-Fi

If and when we get Wi-Fi will there be a number we can call for tec. support, to help us set up or if we have other proplems with it?

Hi all

First of all, let me make it clear, I do not want to see housing on the golf course; I would far prefer to have it returned to being a golf course, "in perpetuity".

However, there has to be some limit to the rapacity of the Non-UCO ProActive Committee's unbridled greed for our money! 

-

At Mondays meeting of the Executive Board, a member of the ProActive Committee, which I hasten to point out, is not a UCO committee, by their own choice, made known plans to make a motion at the upcoming meeting of the Delegate Assembly to place in the UCO budget for 2013 a line item of 98 cents per month per unit to continue paying an attorney to fight the developers plan to convert the golf course to residential housing. I hasten to note that this sort of  motion was defeated at last months Delegate Assembly meeting!!

Having already burned through $25,000.00 of unit owner money and an undisclosed sum of donations, the ProActive committee now wants another $92,363.04 in 2013 from our unit owners!!

The developer has millions, we do not!! This hemorrhagic rapacity must stop. Is this to become a Common expense in perpetuity?

If the Proactive Committee wants money, let them canvass for donations from the "true believers" in the miasmic not to be golf course in the sky, and stop trying to make their vendetta a Common expense which we can ill afford.

In fact, if you answer a robo-call, it’s unwise to bother following any prompts the recording might offer to be taken off their calling list. Not only will this not work, but the prompts are used as a trick by telemarketing operations to find out if there’s a live person on the other end of the line. When frustrated people inadvertently confirm that for them, the robo-callers can bundle up lists of just those numbers and resell them, Bandy says. “They monetize those live numbers.”

This is why the FTC recommends just hanging up on robo-calls, or not picking up the phone in the first place. The less contact, the better.

If you’re wondering, “What about the do-not-call list?” the unfortunate reality is that most of these robo-callers just ignore it entirely. After all, marketing robo-calls are illegal unless you’ve specifically given a company permission to contact you that way, so what’s one more violation?

FPL surge protection is rip-off, engineer says

Unlike most electricity customers, Isaac Barpal knows a lot about what he is buying. So when his latest Florida Power & Light bill included a come-on ad for surge protection services, which he sees as a scam, sparks flew out of his head. Metaphorically speaking, of course. Barpal could afford the $9.95 per month fee that FPL Energy Services wants residential customers to pony up for what it calls "SurgeShield Protection." And he knows electricity.

Long before hybrids appeared in car showrooms, Barpal and some fellow graduate students designed and built one in California and drove it to Washington, D.C., to show federal officials it would work. Now, as a retired electrical engineer living in Osprey, he talks of decades holding lofty positions with major corporations including Westinghouse — companies where he managed the construction of huge electrical projects in numerous nations or directed a massive research and development staff. He says the surge protection is a rip-off, a trick to take advantage of people's ignorance.

The service offered by the FPL sister company provides protection for air conditioners, pool pumps, fans, refrigerators and various other appliances. And it works, Barpal says. But it certainly shouldn't require an extra monthly fee to get it, he insists. It's like a doctor charging extra for using clean needles, he said. Or a car company saying the basic model doesn't include brakes and adding an extra monthly fee for them. Or a cruise ship captain charging for life preserver access.

FPL spokesman Neil Nissan says that's not so. It's more like buying insurance when you ship a package, or an extended warranty for a car, he says. "Some people want the extra peace of mind," Nissan told me. But yet, the company's own customer information package say it isn't insurance that is offered. It is actual protection. The device makes loss of a major appliance far less likely. Most people have no idea how safe their appliances are or aren't, either with or without that service. All we know is that FPL seems to think it a good idea to buy it and pay for it, for eternity. But Barpal says FPL's system could easily, and should, be equipped to do the same with no such fee. As Barpal explains, lightning is almost always the source of the dangerous surges, and it is not as if lightning is something new and unexpected. It's as common here as rain, and has to be planned for. And the surges that the protection system stops aren't from lightning bolts that strike your property; they hit FPL's system elsewhere, and FPL's wires send it your way.

FPL's sister company stops that surge with a simple device installed near the meter. Barpal estimates the device must cost the company about $10 to $20, plus the installation, which the company says takes about 20 minutes.

Nissan wouldn't say if that cost figure was about right — trade secret, he says. What's not a secret is that customers get to pay $120 a year for it. Potentially forever. "That's just not fair," Barpal insists. As an electrical engineer, it just seems outrageous to him that FPL doesn't surge-proof the system itself as part of the basic service, at very little charge. FPL knows lightning surges will continue to happen, just as they know the sun will shine.

"If they know that something is going to happen," he said, "it is their responsibility to correct it." Instead, you get the mailed version of a tough-guy coming by in a protection racket and saying, "Nice appliances you have there. Real nice. It would be a shame if something happened to them. A real shame."
