SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON A FEW THINGS

With the election campaigns now winding down and March 4 rapidly approaching, I thought this would be a good time to set the record straight on a few things. Specifically, I am referring to certain untrue accusations some of the “malcontents” have made against Dave Israel. I don’t expect any diehard malcontents to change their tune, and I am sure this will generate more unfounded attacks by them, but there may be some of you in the Village who "wonder" about these charges. I have written the following for you.

1. Dave did receive a campaign contribution (a personal check) from Donald Kelly, owner of units in Sheffield O, during a previous campaign, but Dave had it returned it to him voided and uncashed because Kelly had already begun his questionable real estate activities and it was clear his motives were suspect. (The mals don’t tell you this second part.) The check, for $200.00, was obviously for far less than the preposterous $5000 Myron Solomon strongly suggested on one of the malcontent blogs. And Kelly was not Dave's campaign manager. Desperate lies five days before the election do not a campaign strategy make.

2. Dave and Insurance Chair Toni Salometo did save the associations millions of dollars after the Village association insurances were sent out for bid. Toni replaced Dan Gladstone, the former insurance “guru” under whom there had been no competitive bidding and skyrocketing premiums year after year with Plastridge Insurance Agency. Despite this, Plastridge was not excluded from the bidding process. How did they fare? They came in well short of what Brown & Brown quoted us and seemed far less professional. Moreover, the lower premiums made available through American Coastal's entrance into the market were available for two years before Toni came on board and competitive bidding commenced. Did Plastridge's rates come down then as a consequence? No. They continued to spike as shown on a graph published on this blog.

3. The first Phyllis Richland political sign removed from the Aitz Chaim synagogue premises was removed by Code Enforcement. Contrary to what the accusatory mals have suggested, Dave had nothing to do with this. When, in what appeared to be pure defiance, the same or a similar sign was put back up, Dave wrote a letter to Code Enforcement and Peyton McArthur, simply questioning its legality. Dave signed the letter with his own name—not “Peyton Israel,” as the mals have repeatedly accused him of. Anyone with half a brain should be able to figure out how, when one of the mals requested and was shown documentation of this, the two names “Peyton” and “Israel” showed up. Undoubtedly when Code Enforcement saw the second sign had been put up, they didn’t take too kindly to this and took the occasion to charge the synagogue with other illegal signage. It might be well to bear in mind while considering this that illegal IS illegal.

4. Dave never wrote or signed a letter apologizing for charges he had made against First Priority Restorations. There was such a letter, yes—drafted by an attorney for First Priority and sent to Dave for him to sign! Dave did not yield to their scare tactics and did not sign the letter. Yet the malcontents posted a copy of this letter on one of their blogs, as if it was his signed admission of wrongdoing. How underhanded can you get?

The campaign waged by the malcontents against Dave Israel has been like this from start to finish—relentless, petty at times, and unfounded with patently untrue and exaggerated charges. We picked out these four to respond to and explain what really happened. Not with the purpose of rebutting the mals—that would seem to be hopeless—but to set the record straight for the fair-minded among you.

If the malcontents think for a moment Dave is going to respond to all of their misleading and untruthful charges, they are mistaken. There comes a point where one needs to trust a person of integrity, and Dave is certainly that. Did you know that he not only worked with the NSA, which protects  this country, but before this was in the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg? He parachuted out of aircraft many times. Why hadn't I heard about this until recently? Because he just doesn't toot his own horn about it.

Vote for Dave and his team of recommended candidates on March 4, and you will be voting for principled individuals who can work together. And remember, Dave needs a team he can work with, who will not undercut his efforts.

PROFILE OF A SECRETARY

BOBBI LEVIN:
You want a good writer to fill a secretarial position, and that is why Bobbi Levin would be an excellent choice for UCO Corresponding Secretary in the coming election. Bobbi earned her B.S. degree in journalism at top-rated Simmons College in Boston. She is bright, she is energetic, and as she claimed in her short autobiographical sketch at the UCO elections forum, she is "independent."

Bobbi volunteered at the UCO Reporter two years ago and immediately fit right in. You have probably read some of the many articles she has written for the Reporter. The Tatiana and Dominique series so many of you have enjoyed are hers. She has written feature stories on a number of southeastern Florida places of interest, including the Norton Museum; opinion pieces; and interviews such as the recent one with Susan Bucher, our Superintendent of Elections. Bobbi writes in an easy-to-follow and always interesting style. In addition, she does a great deal of copy-editing for the paper—proofreading and fixing up what others have written so it is more readable and more easily understood.

Bobbi has been Secretary-Editor of the Democratic Newsletter from 2007 to the present. She is a team player and always cooperative. I believe she will fit right in at UCO and do a great job.

PLEASE VOTE ON MARCH 4 FOR BOBBI LEVIN FOR CORRESPONDING SECRETARY.

March 4

As we get close to March 4, Esther's blog is panic masquerading as strength.

............................................
Hi Desirade,

Since Esther lost in her attempt to win the UCO Presidency, she has been engaged in a frenetic vendetta. Her diatribe being driven by pure hatred at the idea of being denied her goal.

It is important to realize that nothing in her blog is worthy of response.
In the words of my Grandmother, "Don't fall into it's mouth"

KIND WORDS FROM A FRIEND - VOTE TEAM DAVE

-
Positive Win Win with Dave
Remarkable changes from six years ago. Dave Israel brought in Sunshine laws, open meetings, committee transparency, computerization of records (now paperless), organization and future planning. Meetings can also be seen on video on Channel 63 and on the Blog. Records can now be found with the push of a button.
Dave improved communications among all of the Officers of UCO, also communications with the various Associations and the residents of Century Village. Dave developed an email system within UCO and over the years extended it to the Associations.
Dave has sent out thousands of Minutes of meetings and Public Service Announcements to keep residents informed.

Dave is the most productive workaholic in CV and he is our protection from greed, ignorance, and poor planning. Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win!
-
This 'Old Village' needs expert eyes on the future - risk reduction programs, disaster recovery protocols and related Infrastructure analysis. Dominick Guarnagia, Dave, and our CAM in training Donald Foster, have the skills and continuously prepare our plans.

For an accurate CV election there will be touch screen voting, then electronic clickers for Delegate Assembly voting. Onwards.

Bring back Team Dave, Dominick, and Donald Foster!

-
Positive Insurance Coverage
Remember the first year our insurance was put out for competition by Toni Salometo, coverage improved, premiums fell 40%. Our Insurance Chair has, over the last five years, saved us $10 million in Premium Costs, enuf said, thank you – Bring back Team Dave, bring back team Toni Salometo – assure continued reduction in premiums and innovation in Insurance protection for our Village.
-

I sent my letter in Jan 10 for Feb issue but was assured it would be in the March issue instead. I cannot find it!
Herewith:
As elections approach I want to say that Dave Israel's high personal integrity is the bedrock of our village. He is not seen a great deal in public, he is not out glad handing, but we know he is there for endless hours in UCO and at Delegate meetings. To know him is to have the greatest confidence in anything with which he is associated. He helps every and all associations, mine would have been much poorer without Dave's advice. UCO staff appreciate his outstanding abilities and his willingness to assist with any and all tasks. Do not let the malcontents try to burn down the structure of the village.
Nobody looks after CV better than Dave Israel. Nobody!
-
Finance Positively Forward with Team Dave

Dave brought in Howard O'Brien who overhauled our archaic system, he brought in electronic bill pay and streamlined our banking methods. Now we are current, accurate, clear, and complete without need for folksy woffling about our pennies. Howard worked with major corporations and banks and was New York CPA 1973 - 2006.
Thanks for nailing a CV embezzler Howard.

Let's continue Finance Dept efficiencies. Vote Howard O'Brien and Team Dave
-
Asset recovery program with Team Dave

Dave and Ed Black used our good business relationship with WPRF to create an asset recovery project to help associations bring back defaulting units to being productive again. This innovative concept has spread to other Century Villages and has recovered 25 units here. Including one in my association. - Thank you Ed and Dave and WPRF. Bring back team Dave and Ed Black.

MAKING A STATEMENT

Because there were only 10 candidates for the 10 open slots on the Executive Board, all the candidates will be elected to the Board. Why then, one might ask, vote for only five as Dave Israel suggests in the blog post naming his recommended slate? Why not simply vote for all ten?

The answer is: In order to make a “statement.” If enough delegates limit their Executive Board votes to the same few, everyone will see at a glance who did well and who did poorly when the votes are tallied up and published. It may be helpful information to remember in the future.
.....................................................................
Blogmeister adds:

The concept is simple, vote for those team members who have demonstrated high productivity and dedicated service.

For those who disrupt meetings, launch frivolous law suits, and fill the Internet with ghastly name calling; send them a message with single digit vote totals.

THOUGHTS ON CERABINO

I thought the Cerabino article was hilarious. Sometimes you need to step back and take a look at things from the perspective of an outsider. Condo living is a pretty funny thing to begin with, and Cerabino has written a book about it. I'm going to send my brother and a friend of mine, both of whom live on Cape Cod, a copy of the article.

I don't think Frank was "disrespectful" of the Village as Esther Sutofsky maintains. He was just enjoying a good laugh and sharing it. I laugh along with him. It's healthy to laugh at yourself.

I do think he sided far more with Dave Israel and his administration than with the malcontents, but that is just my own opinion. If you read his column carefully, you'll see it is almost all quotes—if not exact quotes (with quote marks), then "almost quotes" (without the marks). The telling thing to me was that the quotes from the malcontents were essentially a display of their vulgarities and grossly exaggerated charges, while the quotes from Dave & Company were mostly their claimed accomplishments.

Cerabino certainly makes a point of how extreme some of the mal stuff has been: "For a daily dose of political vitriol, Villagers can go online to My Village Blogger, which bills itself [my emphasis] 'The Voice of the Malcontents.'"

Plus, "A dictator who has rested control of the pool and clubhouse? It's like reading dispatches from Aleppo [an ancient Arab warring state], not Okeechobee Boulevard." Cerabino (purposely, I'm sure, with no "sic") retains the malcontent misspelling of "wrest" in this clearly satirical remark.

And the kicker: "Underhanded depravity? Seriously? Yes, they're heavy on the mustard here." I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes at this one.

Yes, perhaps he was a mite short on respect. Of the malcontents.

I could go on, but I think the point has been made. The Village has been subjected to what everyone in Southeast Florida fears, the Cerabino fires. We have emerged a little scorched, but so what? Hopefully we can enjoy a good laugh about it and perhaps not take ourselves quite so seriously. And stop the ridiculous hyperbole.

CANDIDATE RICHLAND TO RESIDENTS - "I'LL TAKE SUPPORT FROM ANY GROUP" - AFTER ALL, THE ENDS JUSTIFY THE MEANS DON'T THEY? DON'T MISS THE FREE LUNCH!

The Ends justify the means - don't they from David B. Israel on Vimeo.

- By the way, I would NEVER accept support from a group such as the Malcontents Dave Israel

Vitriol trumps all in Century Village election

Vitriol trumps all in Century Village election
Frank Cerabino
Things have taken a nasty turn in this election season.
No, I’m not talking about the national presidential election. I’m talking about the upcoming election at Century Village in suburban West Palm Beach.
That national stuff is child’s play. You don’t get to the real no-holds-barred political fights until you have a group of retirees clawing at each other over that last hurrah.
For the past six years, Century Village has been led by David Israel, who is either an accomplished visionary leader, or the worst thing to hit the condo community since the doughnut hole in prescription insurance.
It depends who’s narrating. But one thing’s certain: Israel’s up for reelection on March 4 and the knives are out.
“David Israel brings shame to Century Village” was the front page headline on last month’s CV Messenger, which purports to “Shine a light on the news” in the Village, and is one of the sharp-tongued rogue outlets of information in this sprawling condo community.
The story excoriated the village president for calling Palm Beach County code enforcement officers to remove a rival candidate’s campaign sign hanging on the fence of a temple beyond the condo’s Haverhill Road gate. As it turned out, the code enforcers not only got the sign removed.
“The Aitz Chaim Temple is the real victim in all this,” the story said. “They received six separate citations from code enforcement for minor non-compliance issues that were never a problem until David Israel decided to complain.
“Israel has gone to great lengths to stifle opposition in the upcoming election, banning the distribution of literature and any thought of speaking to residents … about CV political issues, but this latest action reached new depths of underhanded depravity.”
Underhanded depravity? Seriously? Yes, they’re heavy on the mustard here.
For a daily dose of political vitriol, Villagers can go online to My Village Blogger, which bills itself “The Voice of the Malcontents.”
On Tuesday, the blog referred to Israel as both a dictator and The Wizard of Oz, and the man who single-handedly “rested control of the Clubhouse and Pools and decreed no more electioneering.”
A dictator who has rested control of the pool and clubhouse? It’s like reading dispatches from Aleppo, not Okeechobee Boulevard .
There was even a protest rally scheduled to complain about the ban on campaigning at the clubhouse and community swimming pools.
Israel does have his supporters, who refer to his detractors as “the mals,” which is short for malcontents.
“Dave Israel hasn’t had any rallies at the pools …” one of his supporters wrote on another community blog. “So it’s not as though he HAS been allowed pool rallies during this campaign and the mals have not. So what’s the big beef ?”
Israel was elected as vice president of the governing board at Century Village, known as UCO, in 2009, and then as president in 2010, a position he has held since. In a recent post in anotherVillage blog, “Our Village,” Israel detailed the accomplishments that he and his leadership team, which he calls “Team Dave,” brought to the condo complex.
Century Village was “being run like it was 1960” when he came into office, he said. He brought the village into the computer age with a village-wide email system and digital record keeping that eliminated “file drawers, rotting boxes and file cabinets,” he wrote.
He installed a Team Dave member to run Channel 63, the village’s closed-circuit TV station, and the village’s official newspaper, The UCO Reporter. And he brought in help with expertise in the insurance world to save the Village millions of dollars in insurance premiums, he wrote.
His detractors, though, aren’t impressed. They’ve posted “Dump Dave” signs around the village, and wish that the Village had term limits for its elected leaders.
“The President acts as if he is the God-given savior of this Village,” wrote a poster on the My Village blog. “He has established a system of emails, which are privately owned by him. He has established a Village blog, which is privately owned by him. He has a voice in the UCO Reporter; his opponents do not.”
As next month’s touchscreen voting (thanks to Team Dave) approaches, the political climate in this gradually more computerized Century Village continues to heat up through its online blogs.Although, I’m not sure how much hotter it can get.
“It took Hitler many, many years to gain control of everything in Germany and elsewhere in Europe,” a village blogger wrote this week. “It wasn’t just overnight that he did this. And then, he could do ANYTHING he wanted because he controlled everything that existed. Everyone was scared to death — literally.
“Fast forward to Century Village,” the post continues. “Israel controls everything and everybody.”
Yes, that’s right. Political discourse has reached the Hitler level in Century Village.
Not even Donald Trump has gone that far yet. fcerabino@pbpost.com

CANDIDATES FORUM - FEBRUARY 15, 2016 - LIVE IN CYBERSPACE

UCO Candidates Forum 02-15-2016 from David B. Israel on Vimeo.

SIMPLY EXQUISITE - MEET LILY

- Dave Israel

THE IMPORTANCE OF A TEAM

Kudos to Susan Bucher for an excellent job moderating at the forum yesterday. Most of the people I know felt that Dave Israel won hands down over Phyllis Richland, who showed a surprising  lack of understanding of matters such as Wi-Fi and seemed defensive and angry when asked about her previous resignations and absences during UCO working hours.

Unfortunately Dave didn't have enough time to say all he wanted to say in his opening statement in the allotted time. I am glad he has put the full statement on the blog.

What struck me the most in his statement was his emphasis on the necessity of a TEAM. Dave is a visionary. One of his areas of expertise is computer-related matters, which in this day and age affect us all. Both Phyllis at the forum and Gary Olman on his blog have acknowledged the wide array of Dave's accomplishments.

As Dave says in his statement, however, running UCO is not a one-man job. Anybody running a big business, as Grace M points out in her comment, knows this (or should). You need a team. You can't have dissenters running around all over the place actually TRYING to upset every applecart you have put in place. You can—and should—have people surrounding you whom you will listen to and who are not all "yes men." But that is wholly different from having those who are dead set against you on your team, actually wanting to sabotage your efforts.

This is why I am urging Village delegates to not only vote for Dave Israel in the March 4 election, but to also vote in Ed Black and Joy Vestal as vice presidents and to vote in John Hess and Bobbi Levin for the two secretarial positions. UCO needs all five officers in place in order to function harmoniously, get things done, and serve the Village effectively. WE will be the losers should these folk not get in.

Ed Black is NOT the ogre, by the way, he has been portrayed by some to be. I think it is fair to say that like many of us he has mellowed over the years, and that's a good thing. Neither is he the puppeteer pulling Dave's puppet strings, as the mals would have you believe. But he HAS been an indispensable member of the team, often the "go to" man and the one to drop everything and fix a problem—at the security guard house, at the Reporter office, you name it.

Joy Vestal is amazing. I don't know myself how she can hold down two jobs and do them effectively, but she does. She is a winner. I sure enjoy working for her and Myron Silverman at the Reporter.

Thankfully, Dom Guarnagia will automatically be elected to the Executive Board. Can you believe that Dom, who has done so much for the Village, was actually criticized along with Toni Salometo by the mals for being too quiet?

I don't know how many of you know Bobbi Levin, but I know her. She's on the Reporter staff. She's bright, she has no axes to grind, she does copy-editing, and she is a very good writer. She is a natural for the job of Corresponding Secretary. I hope you vote her in.

Finally, John Hess. John cracks me up. He said at the forum he has done a "fair" job as Recording Secretary. I love such understatement. It will win me over every time. I chided him about this remark in the parking lot after the forum. We laughed, and he said, "Well, I suppose I COULD have said I take copious notes…." Please vote John in. We need his kind in UCO.

I hope you will vote in Dave's whole team in the election.

MY MESSAGE TO THE OFFICIAL CANDIDATE FORUM - FEBRUARY 15, 2016

Today’s the Day!

All Century Village Residents,

Join us today for the 2016 UCO Candidates Forum. Susan Bucher, Supervisor of Elections for Palm Beach County, will moderate this non-partisan event where you can see, hear and ask questions of all the candidates for UCO office.

It starts at 1:30 PM in the Clubhouse Theater and will end around 3:30 PM. Don’t miss it ─ you’ll be glad you came!

Help..Disturbing the peace???

We need your urgent advice. One of our second floor corner unit tenant seems to have decided to stay up all night and sleep during the day. This tenant  walks with heels on ceramic tile floors back and forth  at all hours of the night keeping the owner below awake.. The board tried to resolve this issue by talking to this tenant and having the complainant explain to this upper unit owner the noise it creates and how they have not slept soundly in the past month. The problem is the unit owner will not admit that he or she is making excessive noise.  What are our options to solve this situation? Your advice in this matter would be most appreciated. Thank you.

WHAT'S THE BEEF?

Yesterday I saw the latest Messenger newsletter on our bulletin board, and I took it down to read. As usual, it was almost entirely negatives, bashing one person after another, with the UCO president, Dave Israel, of course, their prime scapegoat. Later I got to thinking, what if all this bashing and negativity were in the UCO Reporter?—for that is what the mals would like. I would venture to say not many residents would want to read the Reporter anymore!

I also got to thinking about the mals' whining and complaining about not being allowed to use the pools for their "rallies." The reason has been made clear: it's because these partisan meetings of a dozen to thirty people could very well be an unwelcome intrusion to those who want to be at the pools in order to relax and enjoy some quiet—the purpose of the pools in the first place.

Then I got to thinking: Dave Israel hasn't had any rallies at the pools (at least not in this election cycle), so it's not as though he HAS been allowed pool rallies during this campaign and the mals have not. So what's the big beef? And what's the big fuss about using the Clubhouse for the malcontent meetings and rallies? Dave hasn't had any such get-togethers at the Clubhouse during this election campaign that I'm aware of. His campaign meetings have been in homes.

Dave has one blog, and the mals have THREE. Dave doesn't have "Vote for Dave" signs up all over the place, but the mals have their signs up all over. To my knowledge, no Dave flyers have been put on bulletin boards—which are considered private property, for condo use only by some condo associations.

And I don't see how the mals can complain (though they do) about the delegate meetings. They have had more voice—strident, disruptive voices at that—than anybody! They go on and on, one after another up to the mike, while the "non-mals" (the sensibles) patiently put up with them, only emitting a collective groan every so often. The long-suffering sensibles, however, know how to have the last word—through their votes.

So what's the big beef? I'm beginning to think the mals are crybabies.
