Good Neighbors and Golf Course Issues
Century Village seems to have more than its share of disputed. These disputes breed a dispute mentality and that, in turn, breeds more disputes.
Maybe we can resolve one dispute as good neighbors and begin a pattern for some of the other issues that lower our joy of living here and make the type of legal actions we all read about more acceptable than they should be on our home.
We should end the legal action associated with the golf course development and work toward a mutually agreeable set of land covenants that would bind the developer to reasonable actions that both sides accept after negotiation and compromise.
Eventually the County Commissioners will agree to some type of development rather than encouraging the developer to allow the land to be taken, for example, for non-payment of taxes that might happen if all development is refused.
I suggest a negotiating committee be formed with four people from units that directly face the property and two people from the CV community. If necessary, a facilitator or mediator be retained and paid partially by CV and partially by the developer.
The result would be a set of land covenants that both sides aggree would replace the existing restrictions on any development.
We could begin the negotiations by urging:
1. the present fence be relocated to be a minimum of 25 feet from any CV unit.
2. Retail development be restricted to the area near Haverhill Rd. with the balance to be used for lower traffic facilities such as an extended care facility.
3. No access from CV to and from the developed property is to be built or used unless CV agrees to a secure staffed gate with security equal to the present CV gates.
4. The boundary between the two properties should be lighted and landscaped by the developer .
This is a fair start. The critical item is that CV agrees to support development with an agreed set of restrictions applied to the land and will work with the developer to gain the necessary approval from the County Commissioners.
This is better than continuing an expensive fight we will ultimately loose.

NO TERM LIMITS REMAIN THE ORDER OF THE DAY - DELEGATES SHOW UP IN FORCE!
-
-
Despite the fact that it is high summer, and normally, attendance is low, 166 Delegates attended our Delegate Assembly meeting, to send a strong message to the "usual suspects" who came to disrupt our meeting that; no officer of UCO shall be term limited.
-
Thanks to our Delegates, who would not be bullied and intimidated by the small corps of disrupters, who bring nothing to the table but dissension and frivolous motions. I look forward to the election in March, to see how the new Bylaw will play out.

TERM LIMITS - HERE WE GO AGAIN
-
FRIVOLOUS = Not having any serious
purpose or value! -
-
On Friday, July 5, 2013 at the meeting of the
-
Delegate Assembly, the Delegates voted by a
solid majority to sweep away term limits for all
Officers of UCO.
-
Now a scant month later comes a petition to
place term limits on all Officers of UCO.
This petition is typical of the disruption and
dissension which has been visited on our
Delegate Assembly meetings for 3 years, by a
very small group.
-
Please do not allow the "Usual Suspects"
to obstruct the clearly stated majority intent. I
ask that
our Delegates overwhelming reject the
frivolous motion
to return Term Limits to our UCO Officers

medical alert scam
Warning for seniors on medical alert
scam:
Mrs Adams, 70, keeps getting those annoying robocalls that she just knows has to be a scam. The
voice implies that somebody, her doctor or maybe her children, signed
her up for a medical alert system. The recording implies its all

Look to the positive
I just can't leave you Century villagers alone for any length of time. I have been away for 5 weeks and look what has happened. Fences, robberies , assaults! Not good. We have to make community and caring happen here. We have the opportunity. We can start by saying,"hello, good morning, good afternoon" when we see a neighbor. And anything suspicious call security. We have UCO and Eva who are cooperating with each other and us and our needs. Look to the positive.
And I must compliment the UCO reporter for a job well done. And thank you David Israel and the board for bringing us into the 21sr Centry of the computer age.

WEST PALM BEACH CENTURY VILLAGE BURGLARIES
WEST PALM BEACH CENTURY VILLAGE BURGLARIES
Residents uneasy after theft spree
Seven Century Village condos have been broken into recently.
By Jorge Milian Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Even after burglars stole thousands of dollars’ worth of property at his Century Village condo on July 16, Frank Veglia said he felt lucky. The crooks left behind a 58-inch flat-panel television in his bedroom.Monday, July 29, 2013

Break-ins in our Village
Criminals do a much better job of sharing their success than do our residents. The word on the street is clear, "shop in Century Village" they are very welcoming and will leave expensive valuables in their vehicles for your shopping pleasure. They even leave their vehicles UNLOCKED, for your convenience and speedy departure so your capture will be very unlikely.
Many Associations don't notice strangers in their community or unknown vehicles parked nearby, providing a safe haven for these criminals.
Guess who the victims believe are responsible - Security! Unfortunately we do not have the manpower to patrol this square mile Village at all times and the criminal element is well aware of this, we desperately need your help. Before parking your vehicle when returning home to your unit - look around you - do you see any strangers? If so note a clear description, then leave the immediate area, call 911 to report the incident and give a full description. When the Sheriff arrives it will be safe to return to your unit.
The Associations who are actively concerned about strangers are increasing, but we are a long way from solving this problem. Any strangers or occupied vehicles that are in your Associations area, should be reported to the Sheriff's office - call 911. Never approach strangers or occupied vehicles, that seem suspicious, just call 911 to report the suspicious events, and remain inside your unit.
The only way to safeguard your belongings is to remove these valuables from your vehicle and to lock your vehicle every time you park, where ever that may be. Breaking windows creates a concern the criminal might be detected simply due to the noise of breaking glass, perhaps causing the criminal to "shop" elsewhere.
Each resident must take notice of suspicious items to act in all our best interests, including unexpected noises from units where the resident is known to be at his/her seasonal residence. Otherwise the criminals will be moving all furnishing from neighboring units totally risk free.
We must work together to act as eyes and ears for our individual Associations, reporting to a permanent resident acting for our Association's protection and safety.
PLEASE Use as a handout to your summer residents so they will be better informed. Our safety should be our first priority! Ed Black Security Chair

Comcast Rip Off
I am once again fighting with Comcast over my internet bill. It just arrived at my house at $125.00. I was told in May that I was to get a special promotion because they had upgraded my cable to pay $17 without my consent when our box stopped working, we were given the wrong box and then we went three weeks without cable because they couldn't get me a working box. They even charged us for a tech to come out after three attempts of putting in the box ourselves. Now they are saying that I had agreed to upgrade my internet to double the speed so they increased my bill. WRONG AGAIN.
ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTS AS TO WHERE I CAN GET AN INEXPENSIVE INTERNET PROVIDER. this bill is outrageous.

Wellington Swimming Pools
I enjoyed a lovely swim in one of the Wellington private swimming pools today. It was cleaned this morning and was thus pristine and comfortable.
Yesterday there was a yellow/brown scum around one side of the pool - not nearly as pristine and a bit uncomfortable.
I know the cleaning folks do an excellent job and clean the pool frequently - but I couldn't help but wonder if the scum was related to the policy of keeping the rest rooms locked at all times??
I suspect that occasionally a senior citizen may use the pool at Century Village and from time to time need to use the rest room urgently. Now that there are new locks on most of the pool fences, would it be possible to reconsider the policy of locking the rest rooms when the pools are open? Thank you.
While we are reconsidering, how about donating the pools to UCO so they could be used by everyone, maintained by UCO, and left unlocked during the day?
As our population changes, there are fewer people using the pools and thus less advantage to preserving the pools for the exclusive use of the very few.
Thank you for considering this. /Stu

REFLECTION BAY - WHOSE SHOULD PAY THE COSTS OF A LEGAL BATTLE
It seems to me that the ongoing "perpetuity" battle, and the encroachment, easement and property damage problems that are sure to come, are separate issues. As a stakeholding homeowner whose home does not abut the construction site, I have no problem paying for my share of the legal costs associated with the ongoing construction, but the "perpetuity" matter belongs to the Proactive Committee, and the homeowners who share and support their interests.
If I am going to pay an extra dollar per month, I want that dollar entrusted to, controlled, and managed by UCO, an organization which represents the interests of ALL CV homeowners, and which is accountable, indirectly through my Delegate, to me.
If I am going to pay an extra dollar per month, I want that dollar entrusted to, controlled, and managed by UCO, an organization which represents the interests of ALL CV homeowners, and which is accountable, indirectly through my Delegate, to me.
The Pro Active Committee does not, in my opinion, represent my interests or the interests of most homeowners in Century Village. In fact, I believe that the Pro Active Committee, by their stubborn reliance on the "perpetuity" claim, has created an adversarial relationship between all Century Village homeowners and the developer, a condition that most of us had no hand in creating, and which will very likely force us all to spend more money on lawyers. Handing over money to this organization would be a mistake, and I support my own association's Delegate in opposing this funding in the 2014 UCO budget.

Air Potato
This post is for a CV friend before his building disappears under the foliage. (So cool your jets Dave.)
The leaves are so handsome, heart shaped, BUT Palm Beach County Code - Article 14.D requires removal of air potato from all developed properties countywide (also Old World climbing fern).
Removal required by Jan 1, 2004

POTS - IF YOU MUST HAVE A RELIABLE TELEPHONE THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A "FIVE NINES" SYSTEM
Hi all,
This is in response to the Lanny Howe Post about Telephony.
-
Dave Israel
-
This is in response to the Lanny Howe Post about Telephony.
Plain old telephone service (POTS) is
the voice-grade telephone service that is based
on analog signal transmission that was common before the advent of advanced
forms of telephony such as
Integrated Signals Digital Network (ISDN), cellular telephone systems, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). It remains the
basic form of residential and small business service connection to the
telephone network in many parts of the world. The term reflects the technology
that has been available since the introduction of the public telephone system in the late 19th
century, in a form mostly unchanged despite the introduction of Touch-Tone dialing, electronic telephone
exchanges and fiber-optic communication into the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
While POTS provides limited features, low bandwidth, and no mobile capabilities, it
provides greater reliability than any other telephony system. Many telephone service
providers attempt to achieve dial-tone availability more than 99.999%
of the time the telephone is taken off-hook. This is an often
cited benchmark in marketing and systems-engineering comparisons, called the "five
nines" reliability standard. It is equivalent to having a
dial-tone available for all but about five minutes each year.
Please think about it!
Please think about it!
a couple points... and then some!
1. As long as unit owners don't get involved, people like the malcontents will go on scaring people into believing falsehoods. Accusations of David Israel bankrupting Century Village are rampant. I don't know where they get their information, but I've seen the treasurers reports given at the Delegate meetings and nowhere does it show Century Village being bankrupt or even close to it. I recall the Treasurer denying the Bankruptcy accusations on more than one occasion.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2.The by laws clearly say the residency requirements for all officers, yet they get ignored. My proposal on the requirements only made it possible to PROVE residency, but it has been twisted into a personal vendetta. Yes, the Treasurer is believed to fall into that category at this time, and some question John Gluzack's residency also. John happens to be away due to a medical issue that can not be done here (so I am told) and I can not fault a medical issue unless it will keep him away for an unreasonable amount of time, who decides what an unreasonable amount of time? That should probably go through the normal channels, But to be an officer here and live elsewhere is inexcusable. Just having your name on a deed doesn't hold water if you do not live there nine months out of the year. I totally understand that the Treasurer has many friends here and that she does a good job. Doing a good job may be enough for some, but the by law requiring residency was put there for ALL not for some. should there be something on the books about a medical issue? I believe there is, depending on interpretation, if some one is incapacitated. Is John incapacitated or is he away for treatment? The way I understand it is that he is away for treatment, not incapacitated. All in all, that is for the officers, executive board and delegates to decide. Would he be living in Century Village had he not gone for treatment? Is he returning after his treatment? These are the questions that need to be asked.
He did not buy a place down the road and kept his job here. Different situation.
What his ailment is, is his business. I understand it to be legitimate, and I only hope his treatment is successful and he returns soon. My prayers are with him and hopefully yours as well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My offer to resign is withdrawn... Malcontents, deal with it. say what you want about me, call me crazy, call me deranged, whatever. All you did was piss me off. I will do ALL I can to do what's right for CV. like it or not. If you people have proof, present it or be quiet. I presented proof. dispute it.

IS EGGS ALL IN ONE BASKET A GOOD IDEA?
Until now I have generally been a believer in not having all one's eggs in the same basket. For this reason I have the Comcast TV, but a land-line phone and computer connection through the phone line (AT&T--the kind allowing you to speak on the phone AND use the computer, a "faster" computer service but not the very fastest).
It's costing me a bundle each month to have this land-line AT&T service (close to $100), and my daughter-in-law and oldest grandchild are telling me I would save money by having Comcast for everything. They say that when companies like Comcast have more and more presence in a given area, they can give the best service at the lowest prices.
What would you recommend? I can of course speak with Comcast, and will, but I don't entirely trust the typical salespersons concerning add-ons, taxes, and fees, nor concerning the special deals lasting only a short while. It seems that whenever I've made similar changes in the past, no matter how thoroughly I've questioned the salesperson, the cost always ends up higher than what was quoted. It's NEVER been lower!
How have some of you made out with whatever setups you have?
I have a separate cell phone, into which I buy minutes good for a year. This works well for me. I use it only for emergencies (take it with me in the car) and when on a trip. I DON'T want to go to all cell phone use, however.
Thanks for any suggestions.

a proposal: Renters Representation
Proposal: There are many renters living here in Century Village and they have absolutely no representation in the affairs of Century Village, yet some even come in and volunteer. Some can not afford to buy, some don't want to buy, but they still go to the shows, join clubs and do volunteer work.
I propose that there be two or four people, voted by renters, to represent them in Delegate Assembly meetings and have a vote. If the assembly agrees, then the representatives could be for east/west or broken into quarters as the vice presidents. The latter would probably best, then one rep would be in each of the Vice Presidents area. This would be conducive to bettering relations with renters and make them feel like they have a part in the day to day operations of Century Village.
Each of the four (4) reps would carry one (1) vote in the assembly for elections, but not eligible for office.
What do you think?
Good Luck
I withdraw my statement...I will not let the malcontents drive me out. they want to try to drive me and, and I was willing to go, but if I do the next person with the most votes after the last one would get in and being it was one of that group, I just can't do it to CV.
