Finally, being something of a purist, I believe that the correct instrument for this piece is a full Pipe Organ. Seasons Greetings
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.
It has been a pleasure working with so many of you in 2012.
From everyone at Becker and Poliakoff, we wish you all the best in the New Year.
THANKSGIVING DAY DINNER
In the event, this article is not able to be included in this month's UCO Reporter, I am taking
the liberty of posting it here, on the Blog.
Our First Thanksgiving Day dinner, was considered to be quite successful by most standards.
The attendance was high, food delicious, entertainment by "Solid Gold Revue" ( Dolores &
Tommy Caruso) superb, along with their Guest singer, our own Norma Lukas, who many
moons ago, sang professionally, during the Big Band Era.
Of course there were some glitches, of which my committee had no control over, due to
miscalculations on the part of the caterer, but all in all, a Good Time was had by most!
After all expenses were calculated, we ended up with a net profit of $505.00...primarily
due to our Volunteer's seeking out shops who offered deep discounts on table decorations,
printed materials ( Holiday Poster, table ID's) as well as an adjustment on our catering agreement.
Since our Community supported this event, and Yes, our Committee too, contributed not only
their time, but their $20.00 as well ( No Free-be's as rumor has it) we concluded we have a
shortage in kitchen equipment, namely Coffee Urns & Water dispenser's and would therefore
purchase & donate 2 - 100 cup Westbend Commercial Coffee Urns, to be used exclusively
in our Party Room, for our Residents, by any and all clubs.
VP Eva Rachefsky, of WPRF was consulted and informed and by the time you read this,
they will be in service ( as of today, 12/19/12)
As for the balance ($212.52 that too will be used for any additional kitchen needs.
My sincerest appreciation to VP Eva Rachesky, her staff, Noreen & Marge, their cleaning
crew, our Security Guards, Capt. Al, his staff on duty and last but not least, My Exceptional
Committee:
Dolores Caruso - Decorations & Entertainment, Olga Wolkenstein & Sonia Goldberg -
Catering, Cindy Reavis, Mimi Nosenchuk and Natalie Hauptman, who handled Reservations.
Suzy Brynes & Tom Ziccardi ( who just stepped up to the plate, as he is known to do) and
my co-chair, Marilyn Pomerantz.
IT DOES TAKE A VILLAGE!

Century Village residents gather to remember those lost in school shooting
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/news/local/century-village-residents-gather-to-remember-those/nTZgh/
By Toni-Ann Miller
Sniffles and quiet tears filled the cool air tonight at Century Village as residents and supporters gathered to pay their respects to the victims, survivors and families affected by Friday’s Sandy Hook, Conn., tragedy.
A woman passed out white balloons to the mourners who sat on poolside chairs. They all released them, and the balloons floated off in a group.
“They left together,” said Sydelle Banks, a resident at Century Village and the organizer of tonight’s vigil. “That’s how those children died,” she said, “Together.”
About 200 people gathered at 7 p.m. by the pool at the Century Village clubhouse off Haverhill Road, just north of Okeechobee Boulevard in suburban West Palm Beach. A rabbi and a bishop shared prayers and words of encouragement with those who attended the 30-minute memorial.
The bishop read the names of those who lost their lives, and Banks rang a bell after each name. Ryan Engelbrecht, a singer and pianist, then sang his rendition of “You Raise Me Up,” made popular by Josh Groban, and followed it with “The Lord’s Prayer.”
For Banks, the emotion of the night had hit home.
Banks’ grandson Josh works as a deli manager in Sandy Hook. One of his regular customers came in Saturday, and he greeted the man and told him to tell his wife hello. Banks said the customer broke down in tears and asked Josh, “Didn’t you know my wife was one of the teachers that was killed?”
Josh was so affected by that exchange that he had trouble working the rest of the shift.
“On Saturday, after he called me and told me that he had to leave work,” Banks said, “I decided that we have to show them solidarity and that we have compassion for them and understanding.”
So she organized the vigil and used word of mouth to inform residents.
Her message to the people in Connecticut:
“There’s a lot of compassion in the world, and people throughout the country share the grief and the sorrow of the survivors,” Banks said, unable to restrain from crying. “There’s nothing we can really do; we can only offer our support and our prayers.”
Myron Solomon, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., had red watery eyes during the entire vigil. He said he didn’t have any family members in the immediate area, but “we all feel the pain of everybody.”
Eva Rachesky is the vice president of the West Palm Recreation Facility, which runs the daily events at Century Village. She said this was the first vigil the village has hosted, and it was much needed.
“It’s a healing for people to share the same emotion, this terrible grief that they feel and (frustration) because they have nowhere to put it,” she said. “I had tears in my eyes, but to see grown men wiping away tears tells you how deep this goes for people.”
Rachesky, a mother of two, said she hopes people who are affected by the tragedy will take away from the vigil that there are people all around the country whose hearts are breaking along with theirs.
“I can’t imagine what it’s like to have Christmas presents under the tree for children that are never gonna come home to open them,” Rachesky said.

IRON DOME- A GAME CHANGER IN ISRAELI DEFENSE AGAINST HAMAS ROCKET ATTACKS

The following exchange is self explanatory, so if you want to learn more about the Iron Dome defense system, consider attending.

-
Mark,
Thank you for announcing at the December 10 "Success from the
Start" the Ari Sacher event - I really appreciate your responsiveness. Below is a note I have been sending out….please feel free to
forward it to any and all who would enjoy hearing an heroic story
--------
Dear Friend
AIPAC ( The American Israel Public Affairs Committee ) and Rabbi Alon Lefkovitz have arranged for Ari Sacher,
one of the heroic technical creators of the life saving Iron Dome, to speak at
7:30 PM on Tuesday December 18 at Temple Beth Am in Jupiter.
-
This is a great opportunity for you to hear a compelling
story that confirms just how critical AIPAC's efforts are to build an American
- Israel alliance. I have attached a flyer for the event. I have also attached
below a relevant note from Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador the the United
States.
-
Ari Sacher comes to us in North Palm Beach to tell the
exciting story of innovation, American-Israeli cooperation and of recent Gaza
events. He works for the
prestigious Rafael Company and has talked with nearly one half of the US
Congress on Israeli Missile Defense, including a briefing on Capitol Hill at the
invitation of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Israeli Ambassador Michael
Oren. Ari is a highly requested speaker , enabling even the layman to understand
the "rocket science", and his speaking events are regularly
sold-out.
-
The story is right off the "front page" and "evening news",
and Ari tells it with gusto. You will hear just how the defensive missile
system, created and funded due to AIPAC's efforts in Congress, was the game
changer. He will highlight how Israeli lives were spared thanks to the Iron Dome
missile system. If you have any questions call me at 561-630-5811, Rebecca
Leibowitz at 954-382-6110.
-
-
The Iron Dome Military Revolution.
-
Historically, defensive
measures lag behind offensive capabilities. Not so with Israel's new antimissile
system.
-
Two hundred years ago, during the War of 1812,
British cannonballs slammed into the hull of the USS Constitution—and bounced
off. "Huzzah," an American sailor shouted, "Her hull is made of iron!" In fact,
"Old Ironsides" was constructed of sturdy pine and oak, and real ironclad ships
didn't appear until a half-century later, when the Confederate Merrimack battled
the Union's Monitor to a stalemate. Not even the most powerful shell could
penetrate either warship's armor—a breakthrough in defensive
technology.
-
Such revolutions are rare. Throughout the ages, defense has
lagged behind offense. Medieval rulers thickened and angled their castles' walls
to withstand and deflect artillery, but the walls inevitably crumbled. Knights
tempered their armor only to be felled by crossbows and muskets. Allied tanks
subdued German trenches in World War I, and German tanks in World War II
outflanked France's Maginot Line.
-
Defenders were especially helpless
against rockets, from the Nazi V-1s and V-2s to Iraqi scuds. When Iranian-backed
terrorists in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip started firing thousands of rockets at
Israel, the Israeli military was forced to mount costly counter-strikes in 2006
and 2008.
-
But today, the attacked in Israel are now trumping their
attackers. That is because, in the spirit of Old Ironsides and the ironclads,
Israel developed the Iron Dome antimissile system.
-
From drawing board to
deployment in 2011, Israel completed the Iron Dome in a mere three years. The
first two batteries—developed and financed entirely by Israel—took down dozens
of Hamas rockets, making Iron Dome the first antimissile system ever to succeed
in combat. The generous support of President Obama and the U.S. Congress enabled
the construction of four additional batteries. Ultimately, 10 to 13 batteries
and a full complement of interceptors will be needed to defend the entire
country.
-
Intercepting supersonic projectiles in mid-flight is literally
rocket science. Israeli engineers pulled off the feat by combining cutting-edge
tracking radar with electro-optic sensors and mounting them on highly mobile,
all-weather air-defense systems. Iron Dome can hit multiple types of rockets and
missiles at ranges of up to 75 kilometers. It can also be relocated swiftly to
new sites and radically different terrain. (As part of our vast alliance with
the United States, we have offered to share this pioneering
technology.)
-
Most ingeniously, the Iron Dome determines within split
seconds whether an incoming rocket is headed for an open space or a populated
area—and saves its fire for the latter case. Millions of Israelis live within
the terrorists' range, with as little as 15 seconds to reach a bomb
shelter.
-
By neutralizing most rockets headed for populated areas, the
Iron Dome gives decision makers invaluable time to find diplomatic solutions. If
salvos of rockets were pummeling Israeli homes, hospitals and schools, Israeli
leaders would be under immense pressure to order ground operations that could
yield significant casualties. By denying the terrorists a decisive offensive
advantage, Iron Dome will save lives and prevent wars.
-
Before Israel's
recent Operation Pillar of Defense, Gaza terrorists fired some 700 rockets and
mortars at southern Israel, many of which were taken out by Iron Dome. Still
Israel was forced to take action, mounting precise sorties against terrorists
and launch sites. In turn the terrorists fired 1,500 rockets, some aimed at
Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. These might have inflicted severe human and material
loss, but Iron Dome downed nearly 85% of those headed toward populated
areas.
-
Combined with Israel's world-class civil-defense system, Iron Dome
thwarted the terrorists' aim to wreak intolerable damage. Consequently, Israeli
leaders had the time and space needed to join with U.S. Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton and Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in working out a
cease-fire. More than 50,000 Israeli reservists who had assembled on Gaza's
border returned peacefully to their families.
-
Iron Dome is thus a
game-changer, but it isn't a game-ender. Terrorists on our borders have more
than 70,000 rockets, and 15 of every 100 fired can still get through the Iron
Dome. The danger even of conventional warheads is unacceptable, but nuclear
warheads would pose an existential threat. That is why, together with the U.S.,
Israel has developed the Arrow to intercept orbital and suborbital ballistic
missiles, and we have successfully tested David's Sling, a long-range
rocket-defense system.
-
These innovations will not only protect Israel but
enhance security for America and its allies world-wide. Yet no air-defense
system is foolproof, and robust offensive capabilities remain necessary to
protect Israelis from harm. Iron hulls once made war ships invulnerable, but the
skies cannot be armored. At least Iron Dome, along with Arrow and David's Sling,
makes them safer.
-
Mr. Oren is Israel's ambassador to the United
States.

Delegate Assembly Procedures
IMHO.
The Delegate Assembly is a Board of 300+ Directors, it is their job
to judge motions, projects, and plans for serving the village. These
items have been researched and thoroughly vetted by UCO committees, Officers, and Executive Board. The Delegate Assembly deals
with ideas that have been polished and refined.
There
may be people with fantastic ideas as Paul noted below, but they need
to go thru the process. Do not fling ideas at the Delegates without
backup and full of unverifiable claims. That only causes confusion
and wastes time.
If
you have a brand new idea for the village, please DO NOT bring it
untested to the Delegate Assembly. Go to UCO where there is a great
experience base and the historical searchable database, most ideas
are not new. When the idea is properly organised the UCO system will
move the idea/plan to the Assembly. Then maybe we can finish on time.
Also
spare us from historical regurgitation and whining, we understand
some people have unique sensitivities but we should not waste the
time of hundreds of residents.

Back to the 1970s
Why
are members of UCO committees (especially the Executive Board)
starting their own independent groups? This is the way the village
was before 1980 and the formation of UCO. Per Philip Sokol at that
time “there were narrowly based groups which, while certainly
well-intentioned, inevitably competed with each other, with all the
attendant hostilities and personal animosities resulting from such
competition”.
Working
for the common good, cooperating and being productive at the
Executive Board would be better than this.
But,
its a free country so start your own group, give yourself a title,
tell people anything you want, divide the village, and fill the
lawyers' pockets.

Throughout the year I have heard owners saying that he/she would like to be an officer on the Executive Board of UCO. To be on the Board would enable you to have a vote that makes changes in procedures, rules and regulations here in the Village. It also gives one the opportunity to support the issues that now have opponents bringing them to the forefront.
-
There has been much praise and some negativity as to what goes on inside the gates of Century Village.
YOUR VOICE WILL BE HEARD BUT WHERE ARE YOU?????????
As of this date (December 6th) five bios were sent to me. Are you just talk and no action? You cannot run for the Board or any other position if bios are not presented. Don't be on the fence. Send us your bios as soon as possible. If your picture has to be taken by either Ken or Howie or any changes have to be made, you'll have plenty of time to do so.
-
Many times I have explained what by-laws must be adhered to and how you should send them to me. AGAIN.... Email your bio to me at rgwlbf@gmail.com. I will send you an acknowledgment of it within 24 hours.
-
If you do not receive this, please call me at 712-0259. Leave a detailed message with your name and phone number. Do not just say "call me back." Do not disregard this process because, if you do, and the bio has not been received, you will not be able to run.
-
Should you have any question now, send me Email or call me.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL

The Korean War is often referred as “The Forgotten War” As a KW60 Ambassador, I hope to propel Korean War Veterans and their contribution to greater public awareness. I will focus on establishing a local voice of sincere appreciation for the selfless service and sacrifices that Korean War Veterans made on behalf of all Americans. I look forward to incorporating Korean War Veterans history and Veterans into local activities such as community festival events, school programs and commemoration ceremonies.
As part of the program, I plan to thank and honor as many of our treasured Korean War Veterans (June 25,1950 – July 27, 1953) as possible in a heartfelt and meaningful way. I hope that working together locally and reaching across the Palm Beach community, we can partner, collaborate and achieve more to acknowledge our valued Korean War Veterans.

UNITED ORDER OF TRUE SISTERS - TOYS FOR TOTS
As you know
The United Order of True Sisters (UOTS) is a remarkable organization whose sole mission is to help kids with cancer. They do a remarkable job raising funds to give these kids as much of a normal life as possible.
Having said
that, we are collecting toys for these kids for the
holidays. There is no color, or age, or race or religion. These kids are all the same. Remember, everyone's tears are salty and everyone's blood is red.

WI FI Updates
With many of us anxiously awaiting the arrival of WI-FI in C.V., I was hoping one of the folks spearheading the effort could provide a link on the blog's sidebar that would keep us up to date as the process moves along.
I know that hundreds of us are looking forward to its implementation. Providing the most current information will keep us all in the loop.
Thanks.

Fable of the Porcupine
Fable of the Porcupine
It was the coldest winter ever. Many
animals died because of the cold.
The porcupines, realizing
the situation, decided to group together to keep warm. This way they covered and
Protected themselves; but
the quills of each one wounded their closest companions.
After awhile, they decided
to distance themselves one from the other and they began to die, alone and
frozen. So they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their
Companions or disappear
from the Earth.
Wisely, they decided to go back to being
together. They learned to live with the little wounds caused by the close
Relationship with their
companions in order to receive the heat that came from the others. This way they
were able to survive.
The best relationship is
not the one that brings together perfect people, but when each individual learns
to live with the imperfections of others and can admire the other person's good
qualities.
The moral of the story is:
Just learn to live with
the Pricks in your life!

Hungry Howie's has a stupid driver.
My husband and I were both tired this evening so we ordered a pizza from Hungry Howie's. I get a call from a driver when they were ready to leave with the pizza. He wanted to know how to find our address. I asked if he was at Century Village yet? He asked me where Century Village was. When I said it was at Okeechobee and Haverhill he promptly asks me if that is across from the Walmart. I immediately demanded a manager and said they better get a different driver out if he puts Century Village across from the Walmart.

Where is the security in Century Village?
-
Residents have to be ever vigilant, even with their company ,it seems.
At 5:45AM this morning a neighbor of mine was walking along the "walk" area, as she does every morning. she enters into the Stratford C area, where the cars and disposal are.
While walking near Stratford C area garbage bins she sees a man sleeping on some mattresses. She meets someone and they go to security at the East gate.
When they arrive, the man is woken and part of the story, though incomplete, was that he was visiting friends and they threw him out. My neighbor told me he was young, about in his 40's, dressed nicely.
This whole incident is unacceptable to me. If COPS is going around during the night how did they miss him?
What did security at the East Gate finally do? why wasn't he arrested for vagrancy; and what kind of "friend' throws another friend out without seeing him out of the village? if they were that upset or angry with him and he had no transportation what did they expect him to do?
And please, if you are going to walk, be out no matter what the time, please take your cell phone and i would call 911.
And a note to all residents: Century Village is a great place to live and each of us is responsible to keep it that way...keep it safe for all your neighbors by paying attention, following the speed limit, don't litter, keep the noise down if you are having company, ...Am i telling you what to do, you betcha. Seems somebody had to. and I do care what happens here, my home.

WiFi Status for Century Village
I know everyone (the committee especially) is busy with the planning and implementation of WiFi within Century Village; but it would be appreciated if we could get a status report on when might be a realistic date for it's launch within the Village. I was holding off getting Internet connection from Comcast for when I return in January, 2013, but need to know when we can realistically expect WiFi.
A timeline schedule (if possible) of the implementation steps would be appreciated. This would allow everyone to plan for either cancellation of existing service or create the need to continue or request new service until WiFi arrives.
Any new information would be appreciated and thanks for the hard work.

Where was the 11:28 Mall Bus at WInnDixie?
Wednesday November 14, 2012, My wife was at the WinnDixie Bus Stop at 11.15am, the scheduled 11:28 MALL BUS never showed up. Is there an explanation? Or is it that the driver needed an extended lunch hour!
TWO GOOD READS
Two quite different and very interesting books I've read recently are "Killing Lincoln," by Bill O'Reilly, and "The Road," by Jack London. The first, on the Best Seller list, was lent me by a friend, and the second I got for free on my Kindle--because it's in the public domain--by inputting "Free classics." Both are easy reads.
O'Reilly's book covers the remarkably short period of time from when John Wilkes Booth and his fellow conspirators began plotting four simultaneous assassinations, to when Booth was hunted down and shot. A great deal, described in fascinating detail, took place in these few days: General Grant and the Union forces finally cornered the ragtag Confederate army at Appomattox, where Lee, a military escape artist if there ever was one, surrendered to the most gracious terms imposed by Lincoln. Lincoln was reelected President. Booth and the conspirators plotted to kill not only Lincoln, but also Andrew Johnson, the Vice President; General Grant, who had become a close friend of Lincoln; and William Seward, the Secretary of State. Seward was very badly injured, but recovered and bought Alaska for the US. The book tells how the plans to kill Grant and Johnson both went awry. Booth, a glory-seeker, coveted public recognition for his "pro-Confederation" assassination deed, but failed at every turn to be so credited, beginning with his leap from Lincoln's box in the Ford Theater onto the stage, only nine feet below. He tripped on a curtain and fell, breaking a bone in his foot. The book has you on the edge of your seat and gives you a perfect picture of what took place during those critical days.
I understand the Steven Spielberg movie on Lincoln, soon to come out, also has great reviews.
I had read many Jack London books but never "The Road." It's all about London's days as a hobo. A hobo is a tramp who rides the rails. You can't put this book down, it's so gripping. A standout chapter describes how he and the more agile hobos escaped being thrown off the trains time after time by outwitting the train personnel in different ways. They rode in the rail cars, sometimes under them (dangerous if you fell asleep), and very occasionally on top of them (also dangerous). Another chapter describes his 30-day stay in a penitentiary, again explaining how he and others used their wits to get by. He and his fellow hobos--there were hundreds of them in those days--crossed and re-crossed the US and Canada. They communicated with one another through messages sometimes written on water towers, and they almost made a fine art out of begging for food at their stops. It's all explained in this very interesting book.
